A moderate estimate places the number at 500 in terested voters. The meetiug was oallod to order at 11 o'clock by Chairman T. J. Kirfcland, and was opened by an invocation to Hie Deity by Rev. 1^. A. Mitchell. Tbe first speaker was Governor M. P. Ansel, who in the limited time assigned him, gave a very conpreliensiyg idea of what had been accomplished under his ad ministration. He very strongly denounced the inuendo that he was the cause of extravagance in appropriations during his regime, and seemingly made good if tlio demonstration of ap proval at the condition of his remarks is any index to the feel ings and common sense of his andiftnee. Hon. Cole please of New berry, also a candidate for Gov ernor, was then introduced. He m^de, what was in the minds of many, a very strong speech. It was devoted largely to an elaboration of his oharges of ex travagance in the Ansel adminis tration- This kind of talk fell somewhat ilat ou a number of his hearers. Among other things Mr. Blease gave in support of his position and candidacy a com parative statement of amounts of appropriations during the period covered from 190Q to 190b. T?> the uiiiuitated, the argument up peared strong as tho amount up propriuted in 1908 exoooded that appropriated in 1000 by several hundred thousand dol lars In his comparative state ment however, the speaker ut terly failedi either through in advertence, or, by design to give tha tremendous increase in taxable values during that pe riod) or, the absolute necessity for increased appropriations be cause of the growing necessi ties of the people, aocount of natural expansion along all lines of modern progtess. Wo inuy, in this, or a subsequent issue give you this table. The re marks of (VJr. Biense on other subjects were broad a?d states manlike, and ho was liberally up plauded at their conclusion. The Governors wore followed by the candidates for Comptrol ler General, Messrs. N. VV. Qrooker and A. W. Jonos. Both of theso gontlemcn acquitted themselves well, but the general concensus of opiniou is that Mr. Jones will secure the majority o( the vote of the county, Messrs. J. EJ. Swuaringen, E G, EJIujore and S. H. Mellichamp, candidates for feiuporintendent of Education then entertained the mneb depjoted au(\iance, all of whom (not tho audiance) de voted their remarks to good words and promises of tho oom mon sohools, what oaoh would do if elected. While Mr. Swear jngen was most loudly applaud edi it seemed tons that Mr. MelH champ madQ the most solid im pressiuu. And Address# "I was elected to the position of Railroad Commissioner on icy record as a member of the House of Representatives,^ and of tbe State Senate. Perhaps the main reason for electing me to this high position is due to the fact that I was tbo author of the "Jim Crow" law, which requires the railroads of South Carolina to provide separate coaches for the white and colored races. I promised you that X would see that this law was strioly en forced.
