Jnly and ISO* THE PRESIDENCY. Wall, the Republican National convention bu met, nominated its candidates for President and Vice President, adopted a plat form of platitudes and adjourn ed. As was expected, Presi dent Roosevelt's man, Friday (Mr. Taft) was nominsted. Mr. Sherman, the candidate for the secoud place on the ticket, is a fairly well known man in his own state, (New York) and from his record appears to be a man of some force of character, but it is purely and simply Jtoose . veltian force , which being the case, the nomination will not t strengthen the ticket iu New York or elsewhere. All aspects of the situation be lour considered, it seems to us that if the Democrats exercise Only a reasonable degree of com mon sense, the Republican party will be overwhelmingly swept from power In the November election. But, here comes in the rub. Some Republican states man remarked a number of yeurs that the Democratic party could always be depended upou to make a fool of itself at the right time, that right time nat urally being the pivotal point ?Pon which hinged sucoess or failure. There it no question in our m?nd if, following the certain nomination of Bryan by the Den ver convention, a strong run ning mate is nominated and a Sane platform adopted, the Re . publican party will go down to defeat. Roosevelt, Tuft and company, with their oentrifugal ideas of governmont will meet it merited rebulco from the un terrified citiaenship of the ooun try that regards country above party, an4 the people will come into their own again. But, will the Democratic party this year disprove the remark of that as tute old Republioun who made the remark above quoted. Will its leaders show a solid front to the common enemy when the battle is joined, or, will they act like children who build merely to "-knock down again? ' Thei greatest danger to Demo cratic success this year it ap. pears to us is that the leaders of ; the party will fall out among ?themselves at the Denver con Vention, and will take away with them to their homes and States the feeling of rancor engendered through thwarting of their am. bitlon and prejudices agsinst cer tain candidates und seotions. This Is not the tinne for personal, factional, or, seotional differ snces among deinoorats. All Should work together for the good of the whole oountry. Learn a lesson from the Repub I ican party. During ever^ Presi dentiul campaign wo hear news .*11 over of fatal differences among them, but in the general round* up at the ballot box, they inake common causo against uli opponents. Unless the demo crats pursue a similar polioy on election day, they will go down to snother defeat to a oertainty. Referring to our remark about "common sense", the adoption of the polioy indicated above, will be the very es?iOrce of ii, ?nd will insure us almost cep tain victory in November. MR. LYON RENDERS OPINION. ft Mot kflt Fir |i iKhtratiN H Tkty llijIjttfM MM tin. g Attorney General Lyon on Tuesday rendered an opinion to Governor Ansel affecting every eloctor in the State. The con flUutton of JBi)5 Uisf ranch ising ilw o?gr p carried a provision rp- 1 pairing rt raRtikratioa of ivtry j ?Mor js the Stole this ;?r. I The Attorney Qtniral holds, af Hr iptodlof Mvtttl weeks study ing the Uw, that every elector who eras registered any time be fcw the year 1906 must apply I for re registration as if he had; never been registered. All those registered prior to 1896 are en titled to re registration provided they get a certificate from their clerk of court or the Secretory of State showing that, they were so registered. All who have been registered or ro- registered so far this year must be enrolled on the books to be made up by the county registration boards throughout the State this year. Interpreting the constitution further, Mr. Lyon holds that it is maudatory upon the registra tion boards not only to keep their books open daily during the months of July and August, but they must visit each town* ship ?nd industrial community of 800 inhabitants or inure for the purpose of registering* voters during the month of September. * Every man who expects to ex ercise his suffrage privileges and duties should read carefully and act promptly upon the opinion. The qualifications for registra* tion are that the applicant shall read and write auy section of the constitution, or explain it when read to him, and show re ceipts for payment of taxes on $800 worth of property or more, in which ouse he shall be given a certificate, provided he uas not been convicted of any of the orimes mentioned as disqualify ing him.
