Lancaster, Special. ? The inquest
over the body of .1. Hart Sims who
died on Sunday night from wounds
received the preceding Wednesday
was completed Monday night. The
decision that "J. Bart Sims came to j
his death from effects of a gunshot j
wound inflicted bv the hands of Ben 1
Stogner and that Loe Stogner was
an accessory thereto." It. was stated
that Sims on his death-bed said that

er stated that both Lee Stogner and
Ben were seen near the place of the
"?hooting on Wednesday evening last.
In accordance with this verdict, the
two Stogner men were arrested at ,
once. They are brothers of S. Ilamp
?on Stogner, ?who was mortally woun
ded by Sims on February 3. A
motion for bail will likely be made.

Wholesale Arrests of Alleged Tigers.
Greenville, Special. ? Magistrate
Stradlev went on the warpath and
hail his constables arrest 27 persons
charged with running blind tigers.
Half of these arc now in jail and. half
are out on bond. The evidence has
been accumulating for some time and
preparations have been making for
the haul. White and colored arc
about equally divided in the number
arrested.

high sehood. held in Florence April

The Pension Fond:
Columbia, Special. ? Comptroller
General Jones has sent out to the
clerks of court of various counties
in the State the sum of $251,270 as
pension money for the confederate
veterans and the widows of Confed
erate veterans. The appropriation
amounts to $250,000, but there was
a refund of $1,270 due to the fact
that a number of veterans or widows
died since last year. There has bseu
an increase of 214 pensioners since
last year. The number now amounts
to 9,275. Of this number, 4.277 r.re
women, being about one-half of the
total number of pensioners. Those
widows draw $110,310. Those vet
erans who arc paralyzed or totally
disabled come under eln.s A, and re
ceive $00 cach. Class B. those who
hive lost a leg or arm during the war
get $72 each. Class C, those wound
ed in the war or suffered disabilities,
receive $48 cach. Class I"), those
widow:-, whose husbands died or were
killed in the war. receive $48 cach.
Tiie remaining two classes receive
$21.20 each. Excluding the pen
sions of $251,270. the State has paid

Edwin Hill Killed in Horrible
Manner.

a young man of the Cross Hill section
wps killed Inst week in a most hor
rible manner. IIo was ploughing in
a field some distance from his
father's home and it is presumed un
hitched his mule from tlu* plough,
mounted it and rode toward a spring
for water. The mule ran away with
the young man. throwing him and
dragging him all around the Held and
through the woods. The tracks in t ho
vicinity show that the animal was
headed toward t!i?? spring and also
that the body of Mr. Hill was drag
ged for a considerable distance.
When the mule returned to Mr.
Hill's home about dark fears for the
young man's safety were immediate
ly aroused. A searching party was
r.t once organized and at about 11
o'clock young Hill was found nneon
se*)us near the field where be had
bee* ploughing. He was horriblv
mangled and bruised, his bodv toe'ni?
cut almost to pieces by being f ?"i? t
against trees and rocks. Mr. Hill
never regained consciousness.

Death in Hart3ville.
, llartsvillc. Special. ? Leslie, the
2-year-old son of Dr. and Mrs. ,1. L.
I 'owe, died after a few davs illness
with cholera infantum. The death
of this little one has caused much
sorrow in llartsvillc. Last week
denth entered the home of Mr. and
Mrs. J. K. Miller and took away their
110-year-old son. Mr. Herbert Miller,
who had been sick several days with
a fever brought on from being pois
' oned several weeks ago by poison
, oak. Mr. Miller, the father, is a
; prominent farmer of this section,
who resides just beyond the town

Ansel has Named the Solicitors.

nounced that he had appointed as
solicitor for the third judicial cir
cuit Mr. J. B. McLaughlin of Bishop
ville, and for solicitor for thhe Fifth
judicial circuit Mr. Christie Benet of
Columbia. The appointments take
effect on May 1 and expire after the
general election in November when
the solicitors for the regular term are
named.

Charred wood, bricks and twisied
gin lcrs are piled up between the
walls to the second story. Piece by
piece t his must be removed before
the roll of the dead can be complet
ed. Some of the bodies taken out are
mangled and charred beyond recog
nition.

tenement at No. 17 Humhold street,

lyn, caused the deatli of six persons
and the serious injury of four oth
ers. Every member of one family. ;

children, are among the dead. There
were many thrilling rescues by po
lice and firemen and it was due to
their brave work that the death list

more persons who were trapped in
the upper stories were saved by jump
ing into life nets. The financial loss

Mill Opcrativo Shoots Painter.

5f Porterdale. (?a., was shot and in
stantly killed by Jack Pierce, a eoj
ton mill operative of this city near
the corner of Decatur and North
Boulevard. Pierce made his escape.
The cause of tho shooting is not
known, but persons in the vicinity
heard Pierce say to Huff: "Jack,
don't come any further, or I'll kill
you." A moment later a shot was
heard and Huff fell. Huff was a
painter and bore a good reputation.
