Among the n recommendations he makes, is fer one that the expenses of the | soveral great National parties f be paid out of the National treasury. Who ever heard of a greater absurdity? In his re jf.;- marks concerning government wL supervision of rai 1 roads, and other cor porations doing inter- stale If business, we heartily agree. He Er did not however, m our judg i ' ment go far enough in his recoin mendations along this line. We F are not a Solen, nor the son of ? a Solon so fur as we know, but I we think the Congress should | delegate the right to control these several corporations to a committee to be appointed by the legislatures of the several States, the action of these com mitters uaturally being subject to revision by a National board when protest is made. The Presidents twaddling re marks in defense of trust prose |: cutions strike us as silly in the extreme. There has been no time in the history of our coun. try when money, coupled with brain did not dominate our af fairs. There will be no period iti the future when they will not dominate tUem. Why then should those who are not in the jnner circle butt their heads f ugaiust a stone wall of capital when conditions at present are reasonably fair? That the ex actions of corporations are bur densome upou the people is self evident, but the remedy for them does not lie in acts of the Con gress, jit incidentally. The duty of the Congress cousists merely in the passage of acts giviug to the several States ab solute control aud regulation of the various corporations, etc, etc, within their borders, As we have previously stated, we ure a State's Right Advocate, now and forever. We have never conceded that the United States government had auy right to in terfere with the internal affairs of any Slate, and wo will never so concede. In inter-State uf fairs,' it is right and proper that the United States judiciary de partmeuo should be called upon to adjudicate auy matter in dis pute, but that is all we do con cede: THE U. S. SENATOIt smr. We are not the least bit con cerned in the contest next year for the U. S. Senatorship. Sena tor Latimer suits us alright as he is a strong man and a good man. The opposition to him by Super intemlant Martin, wecousider to be a' .stupendous farce. Mr. Martin is merely entering the race" to spite (lover nor Ansel, who, we believe, has more sense than to enter when he will have a walk over for re-elec tion for Governor. If a cer tain clique of people want to beat Latimer, why don't they trot out a dark horse,? say Geo. Johnstone. He is magnectic, able, fully up to the standard of what a Senator, representing the great State of South Carolina should be. But, so is Latimer. We have looked carefully over the Held, aud so far can see no reason why our people cannot with vote, heart aud influence return Asbury C. Latimer to the United. Suites Senate. Much niuuthmg does not constitute sense, vituperation and genoral abuse does not constitute argu ment. SEWERAGE. The sewerage company has reached Broad street in ilieir ex cavations. Their ditches, which are of course necessary to be made in the course of their work, are naturally inconvemcut to both pedestrians, and to those who use autos and horse car riages and buggies (orxys,) but we must endure the ills that are in blissful anticipation of the benefits to come. As we are al ready on record as to this sewer age schema we will not re iterate further than to say that we consider the whole business to be a gigantic humbug. Cam den proper, had no more need of sewerage than we have for fourteen artesian wells on our city lot to supply our fowls with water, and to irrigate our gar den during the dry summer months. . . As everybody has to live however, and the people have spoken, let us have a speedy con siimation of the work contracted for. We have'nt the slightest idea that Camden needed sewer age. Neither have we the slight est idea that having sewerage will benefit Camden in the slightest degree except that the fact will go out iuto surround ing States that we have it, and thus cause some people to "GET THE HABIT" (By permission of Nathan Levy, The Clothier) that Camden is now and forever tree from microbes, bycrobes and other unsanitary things that formerly threatened the tender- 1 foot of the North who meandered South in the pursuit of life, health and happiness. Down South, these are of course guaranteed, but you can't al ways sometimes tell, so let us have that sewerage plant es tablished, and we'll all be happy. This is the season of decay and wrakeued vitality; good health is hard t> retain.
