We note from several exchanges it) nt the new form of money, Clearing House Certificates, are giving great satisfaction wher ever used in relieving the strin gency of the money market. This is a source of gratification to us us it fully proves that the position assumed by us several years ago is correct. It is evi dence that an elastic currency is absolutely necessary for the protection of the business and general interests of the couutry in time of financial panic, when hundreds of millions of dollars in actual money are locked up in safety deposit boxes, or with held from circulation by the basics because of an insane idea that has been injected into the irutids of the bunkers that the country is on the verge of bank ruptcy, this idea being inculca ted by the frenzied financiers of Wall Street, and of other great business centers for the purpose of bearing the products of the farm from winch practically all wealth and prosperity arises. Now, while Clearing House Certificates are performing a great work, to the thought ful, it will be readily seen that they are really only a makeshift. While they are ab solutely safe, the wiles of the enemy are many and devious, and that enemy, the speculator, will eventually undermine, and cast a doubt upon their validity. Tlmse certificates need reinforc ing in point of security. They require iu addition to the present security behind them, the strong ai m of the State. The Legislature is the only body that e.an furnisu this additional security and we sincerely hope Lhat it will at. the coining session pass some measure that will euiaueipale us from our present eoutiilion of serfdom to a heart ? !? ss and unprincipled set of icusnblers and speculators. DISPENSARY DECISION. ( *i ii? I' Justice Y. J. Pope of Llio Supreme Court lias handed clown Ms decision in the Kershaw County dispensary contested "U'eiion case. In that decision, he upholds the action of the Slate Hoard of Election Comiuis ?loners which board decided that the election was illegal. This decision by tho Chief Juki ice did not at all surprise us. Cornier issues of THE PEOPLE will reveal the fact that we pre dicted the ttnal result. We are not cue to crow over those who differed with us on this quvstio", bat? we may say in all truth that we are profoundly gratified at llr- outcome. Now, let us have a rest on the dispensary ques tion for a while. We liaven't the slightest idea that at the n.'Xl session of the legislature, :uv, ; hing along the line of wliis !icv legislation will be attempted o!her than the st lengthening of certain weak points in theCary C-dhran law. Any radical change in the present system should l>e left to the legislature <>l 11)00, the question to come oe 1'ore the people in the August primaries of the coming year, and thoroughly veutilated on the hustings. We hope to be with the Candidates during that cam paign, and will express our sen timents in 110 uncertain tone. Bet and Jim. rn diu icksburg Free Lance.) In t he north west part of our country I hero lives a well unown Irish magistrate. A khiii of lib era I education unci full quota of genuine wit. A short time ago Ji.e 1 ! Set, a colored pair, call ? < .<! iM I.? ; '- cjnire to b^ united for ? Jim, will you take Bet, Without any regret, To love aud cherish, Till one of you perish, Aud is laid uuder the sod, So help you God?'* All being answered in the affir mative by Jim the 'squire turn ed to Bet and said: "Bet. will you take Jim, And cling to biui, Through thick aud ihin, Holding him to your heart, Till deatli do you part?" Bet ucquiesced by a modest bow of the head, and now the pair was dismissed as follows: "Through life, alternate joy a?id strife, I now prouounce you man and wife, Go up life's hill until you get to the level, And solute your bride, you black rusty devil." An Appenl for "The Bread Line." The Bowery Mission 4 'Bread Line" ut which 1,000 men who are out in the streets for the night are given a breakfast of hot coffee and rolls every morn ing at one o'clock, is one of the most pathetic sights in all the wide, wide world: Long before the hour of opening, these poor, starving men stand in a single line that sometimes extends for blocks iu length, waiting for the coffee and rolls. During the last wiuter, this breakfast was given to a total of 144,000 homeless men and boys, and up to date nearly half a million of the homeless have had their weary tramp restful ly interrupted by this unique ministration. The tirst. of these Breakfasts is given on Thauksgiving morning, and the last on the following Easter morning. Altogether the Mis sion supplied, this year, ovtV 233,000 meals and 10,072 1^3g ings to homeless men and boys. . It . is for this grand, philan thropic work that we ask. your kind and practical co-operation. The homeless, friendless, dis heartened and despairing men and boys of the Bowery are not native New Yorkers, but men and boys who, U'jtil within a year, lived happily at the old homestead with father and mother, and perhaps wife They are stranded here, and in des pair appeal to the Old Bowery Mission, which, for over thirty years, has been to the unfortu nate, as the rescue cities of old, | a haven of encouragement, rest and protection. Shall w? turn them away? It rests with the good people of this country to deckle this question, aud may God graciously help you to de cide it right. JOHN C. EARL, Financial Secretary, 92 Bible House, New York City. The Human Machine. You are a complex and in genious machine, "fearfully and wouderlully" made/ If your age is 15 yea'rs or more, you can be figured up to a dot. You have 100 bones, 500 mus cles; your blood weighs 25 pounds; your heart is nearly five inches in length, and three inches in diameter, it beats 70 times a minute, 4,200 times an hour, 100,800 times a day, and 30,722,200 times a year. At each beat a little over two ounces of blood is thrown out of it; each day it receives and discharges above seven tons of that won derful . fluid. It is the most re markable pump in the world. Your lungs will contain a gal lon of air, and you inhale 24, 000 gallons a day. The aggre gate surface of the air cells of your lungs, supposing them to be spread out, its 20,000 square inches. The weight of your brain is llhreo pounds, or more. Your j nerves exceed 10,0(10,000. Your skin is composed of three layers, and varies from one-eighth to i one forth of an inch in thiclcness. The area of your skin is about 1,700 square inches, and you are subjected to an utmosphericpres* sure of 15 pounds to the square inch, a total of 127 tons. Each square inch of your skin contains 3,500 sweating tubes, I perspiratory pores, each of which may be likened to a little drain tile one-fourth of an ag gregate length in the entire sur face of your body of 201,100 feet, or a tile ditch for draining the body almost 40 miles long.
