Camden. 8. C.. Oct. 17th 1007. THE TREND OF THE TIMES. The trend of the times in to wardsceutralization. Instead of government by the people we note a rapidly growing senti ment in favor of government by the few. Against this sentiment we want to enter a vigorous pro test, as the fostering of it, and submission to it cunuot but re sult in the breaking down of our republican form of government, and the destruction of civil -liberty. One of the greatest evils which we are now lacing is Government ,by injunction , and we regret to have it to say that our Governor is at the head of the forces that are leading the way to the adop tion of this pernicious method of government. He has receutly ,had enjoined a number of busi ness houses in Charleston aud vicinity without a shadow of trial because of the suspicion that the proprietors were conducing blind tigers. A well established principle in law is that every man is considered inuocent un til he is proved guilty, but iu the case of these Charleston people, Governor Ansel and his Attor ney General, have assumed that they are guilty, and have so ad judged them without trial. Those ruling our courts are as much to blame for tnis grow ing state of affairs as are the .Governor and Attorney General. Without their connivance or Ob sequiousness, government by in junction would be impossible. We want the practice stopped right now. No man is safe. Even we are not safe because of the fact that occasionally a friend or so come into our office to tuice a drink. Any enemy of ours, aud we can boast of not a few, can go before a judge and tie up our business on the ground that we are running a bliud tiger, a gambling den or some other kind of an immoral place, when nothing is further from our thoughts. No, the thing won't go. If wo are to continue in the good old way, let Gov ernor Ansel have those tempo rary and permanent injunctions dissolved aud promise not to do so any rnofo. Ho tnay have right on his side, and we assume that he has, but there is a right way and a wrong way to do things, and we do not hesitate j to say that in the instances quoted, Governor Ansel has gone at it in the wrong way. We want nothing to do with govern ment by injunction. If anyone is suspected of crime, we have regular avenues by which the suspected party may be con victed or acquired. I CHANGES IN ADVER TISEMENTS. It will sound a little strange to some that a publisher will recommend to his advertising patrons frequentchanges in their advertisements knowing the ex tra woric it will entail upon his printers. Wo however strongly urge this course upon our adver tisers if they would secure the best results from their ads. If you have a bargain in any arti .cle you have to sell, have it promiuontly displayed in your weekly ads. If you have re duced the prico of any article of common use, tell the people about it. General advertising is good enough in its way, but it doesn't go far enough. We fre quently hear the remark that ad vertising does not pay, and to this remark from some people ^ve say, AMKf4, for they goat ?U 1Q ibe wrung way. In ttie first place, these (leople adver tise sporadically. Tbat is tbey place an ad for a month and then take it out, afterwards taking it out cussing the news* papers because the ad didn't pay. Of course it didn't pay. Those kind of ads never pay. It is only by persistent advertis ing that any money is made by an investment of this kind. In the second pluce, numbers of those who do persistently ad vertise, allow the same ad to stand for months. This class of ads do not pay as they should. The people become used to them, and do not give them the attention that a fresh ad every two weeks would attract. Bold display, and a change in ud every two weeks, which every pub lisher allows, always brings re sults, and if advertisers would recognize the fact, we would hear no more of these complaints that ADVERTISING DOESN'T PAY. ? INCENDIARY FIRE VISITS CAMDEN. Two Mysterious Conflagra tions Late Sunday Af ternoon. Camden, Oct. 13. ? Camden was visited by what appeared to be two incendiary tires this after noon iu rapid succession. At 6 o'clock au alarm was sent in from box 27, corner Broad and DeKulb streets. A negro cabin in Rich lajae was burned, and, although both wagons Nos. 1 2 responded promptly, the efforts of No. 1 were sulfcicnt and the blaze was con lined to the cabin, where the tire origiuatcd, al though there were three others iu close proximity. A colored man had moved some of Ins household goods into this cot tage yesterday and although he and some frieuds had been in the house during the day there had been no one there for several hours. Wagou No. 2 had been in its house probably 15 minutes aud No. 1 was just going into its headquarters wheu an alarm was sent in from 27, the same box. This conflagration required the earnest united efforts of both fire companies as it started in a from warehouse in the rear of the Zeuip store aud in a few minutes had spread to the frame warehouse bade of the Commer cial bauk. The dispensary warehouse was in danger for a while and caught several times, but the wind shift ing to the south seut the flames on to the Geisenheirmer ware house, which, however, was seved by hard work on ilie part of the fire cotnpauies. Just below this warehouse, ou Springs & Shannon's cotton platform, were about 100 bales of cottou. In a few minutes 25 of those were blazing but were saved. The Geo. T. Little livery stables were in iraminont dan ger at one time, but were not seriously damaged. Coming so close together, on Sunday evening, the fires ap peared to be of incendiary origin. There was probably full insur ance. ? The State. SIXTEEN YEARS OLD AND NEVER SAT ALONE. A Carolina Parent Has a Child For Kxliibition. Columbia, S. C., Oct- 8. ? Z. W. Wooten a Kershaw county far mer living near Camden, is here trying to make arrangements to exhibit during fair week a queer human freak of nature, the subject being his own 16 year-old daughter. "She is well developed, well formed, of good sight and good hearing, but she hasnever suck led, never talked, never walked, never sat alone and never chewed a mouthful of food. Raised her on liquids," said he, spelling off her accomplish ments and wonders. Mr.. Wooten says he has spent all his possessions raising the child and is now trying to make a living by exhibiting her. So lar he has not been able to raise the necessary cash to conduct the show, ntid says he has too much ptido to make the exhibi tion unless he can do so pro. perly. ? Augusta Chronicle. All male persons living within the corporate limits of cities or towns, students attending any college or cshool of the State, Ministers in charge of regular congregations, teachers em ployed in public schools, school trus tees during their term of office, per sons permanently disabled and those actually engaged in the quarantine service of the state are exempt from the payment of road- tax. All male persons between the ages of 18 and 60 years are required t? pay said road tax or work not less than six days during the year. The poll tax is $1. All information as to taxes will be furnished upon application. In sending for tax auioiin :s and Re ceipts, state with whom the Taxpayer lived in January last, and if known by two names, give both, and be sure to give Township and No. of School District.
