Otl?. lOOfl. ??KNOCKING." Iti the early youth of The People, we, its editor gaiued the enviable, or unenviable reputa tion of being somewhat of a ?'knocker". In other words, we struck at pretty nearly every thing that showed its head which didn't just exactly suit our ideas of the eternal fitness of things. Now, that time, more age and greater scarcity of hair lias somewhat mellowed our ideas, together with the fact that we were not properly backed up by a majorty of the substantial por tion of the community in our several small kicks at the exist ing order of thiugs, we seem to be securing a reputation of an other kind, i.e., a "knocker" at nothing. We can't confess 10 having achieved the former reputation vrith any satisfaction. If we felt it our duty to call atten tion to existing abuses, and to warn our people against pro jected iunovations that we felt would not redouud to their in terest, we always did it with re gret as we knew full well that our views would not meet with approval iu certain quarters where we would have liked to liave had them accepted at our value. That these views did not meet with approval* in those quarters, is evigpnt in the fact that numerous suggestions that we have made from time to time which we believed would be of benefit to the people aud the city, and which we. still believe would have beeu of benetit to them and it, have not been adopted. The "Knocker" is not an indi vidual to be either admired or envied. Our experience and ob servation of the genus is that the ???knocker ' is either a bully or a fool. We hope that we do not come under either category. It was our earnest aim and desire upon beginning the publication of this paper to give- our people a clean, readable sheet, free from bias or prejudice, and wo think that a careful resume of the contents of its columns will convince everyone that wo have Jived up to that aim and desire. Jf we have not, then lay the blame to the incompetence and not to the intention of the editor. On the other phase of the pro |>osition though, we want to plead not guilty. If the editor hasn't done his full duty during the last eleven months of this year in hammering our judges, our juries, our board of com missioners, our city council, and other depart ments of govern ment, we want to know who litis. Look up the record. If you find that any other newspaper ever published in tins city has called more persistent attention to ex isting abuses, and demanded more vigorously their abate ment, then we make a standing offer to sell out our plaut, good will, subscription list, and every thing connected with it for ten cents on the dollar. In our edi torials, at times many of our .good friends differ with us, and we would not have it otherwise. ?The man whose opinions are al ways the reflection of other men's ideas, is usually a prettv poor sort ot a fellow, and we have no ambition to get into that class. Dispensary Affairs. We are informed by Dispo ser H. L. Watkins that the Htate Board of Dispensary Control has raised the price to the various dispensaries of a number of brands of whiskey. The increas ed price will not affect the con sumer except in the case of two brands of the higher grades, the Jirice to them remaining as now. t> will however, affect the profits of the towns ami counties to some extent as the increase in price is principally confined to the more )K>pular medium and low grade ?vbwkies, A Talk to Merchants. This is just a little, talk to merchants who haven't yet ?'Seen the Point." ? Do you carry the goods you find your people send away for? If so, why are you losing their orders? ? Compare carefully what you have with the pictures, descrip tion and delivered prices of the catalogue houses. If your prices are higher, WHY? ? You must answer this ques tion for yourself, honestly and understand! ugly, for you must match values at least to win back trade you have suffered to go elsewhere. ? Is you r price higher? If not, there is something wrong in your way of presenting the goods to the purchasing public. Lose no time in discovering wherein lies the trouble. ? In nine cases out of ten it will be found in insufficient ad vertising of the several lines you handle that are also handled by the catalogue houses. Adver tise, advertise. ? Again, something wrong may consist in the fact that you ad here to a mysterious price- mark which may mean $1.25 to Jones and $1.15 to Brown. ? The retail mail order house, you know, has but one price, and that is in plain figures. Whatever the cause, locate it. ?If you do not handle the goods your people call for, can't you do so with profit to your self? It you can, why refrain from competing with the mail order house? ? Don't forget that there are ways of carrying certain lines of goods with little or no capital in vested. Advertise these lines in a moulhly catalogue, or weekly! through your local papers. The investment will pay. ? With samples alone there are many lines that can be han dled with profit. Furniture, bycicles, sewing machines, vehi cles, lawn mowers, guns, watches rugs, matting, carpets, can be handled easily by sample, photo graph or catalogue. ? The items mentioned are the goods in ^'hicli the sales of the mail order houses are lurgest, und we may include in the list, clothing. A judicious use of printers ink by our merchants will result in a tremendous volume of money being kept at home instead of being sent to the four quarters of the globe where "It never comes back." Hermitage Mill Dots. Well Mr. Editor, there is not very much news from here, We hear there was one or two mar riages on DeKalb Hill, but have not learned their names as yet. There is still a great deal of sickness here, the entire family of Mr. Tom Debruhl has been 5iclc. Miss Daisy Tidwell is quite sick. We are glad to know those sick last week and week before last, are much better. On Nov. 29, Mrs. Lizzie Mad deu passed away after an illness of several months. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved husband aud little boy. We ure sorry to see Mr. Daniel Dennis leave for Laurinburg, N. C. He is a nice young man, and some of the girls have sore eyes over his leaving. We hear there will be a good many mar riages about Christmas. Miner says he is trainiug old Charlie every day for the coming race, in case of a runaway. Mr. Worth Parker, one of our best citizens left us for Virginia last week. He is well thought of, and we are all sorry to lose him. We hear he will make Virginia his home. Well, hoping the edito* and his People had a merry thanks giving, we will close. Tea. | ? All male persons living within the corporate limits of cities or towns, stu dents attending any college or school of the State, Ministers ill charge ofj regular congregations, teachers* em ployed in public schools, school trus tees during their term of office, per sons permanently disabled and those artually engaged in the quarantine service of the state are exempt from the rayment of road tax. All other male persons between the ages of 18 and 60 required to pay said road tax or work not less than six days during the year. The poll tax is |1.
