The returns the election otf Tuesday received by us up tp lt.fu. of yesterday (Wednesday) indicate the election of M. F. Ansel for Governor; J. p. Lyop for Attorney General, j. M. Sul livuu for Railroad Commissioner, and M. C. West fpr County Supervisor. These results were expected by all who had made the situa tion a study. As to ourselves, we wrpte the editorial brevities to be fopnd in ouf tirst column. |>efore the election was held, and didn't have to change a word of them. The returns white of course in complete, indicate a final ma jority for Col. Ansel of 7,0Qp. \?r. Lyon will go in by 15, 000 to 18,000 over Mr. Kagsdale. Mr. Sullivan's lead over Col. Whar ton will not be great., out will be comfortable. The lead and elec tion of Mr. West over Mr. Wil liams con not be estimated as so few boxes have been received at this writing We confess to a feeling of con siderable satisfaction in publish ing the State election returns. For once in our life we support ed the winners which is a fairly certain sign of a healthy growth of proper public pentirpent. With all deference to the hon esty of opinion pf a number of those who differed with us dur ing the recent campaign, men who are honest men and good persopal fripmjs of ours, we can not too strongly condemn the tuctics resorted to by a p umber of others to accomplish not only our defeat but that pf the prin ctples that we rcprpsented in the persons of others. From Sena tor Tillman, the great exponent of dispensary ism, down to the dispensary constable, the cry went up as loud au the thunder of heaven, down ip the gentlest zephyr that ever fanned the pheek of a majden, either the clarion cry, or tho liny murmer ? "Anything, anything tp kill out the opposition." Thanks be to God, and through Him, the op position was uot killed out, and South Carolina is redeemed from the incubus of bpssism and fan atical adherence to a .despicable and mistaken policy, It was! easy in this election for good men to be misledapd to vote contrary to their best in terests. It was equally easy.. for those who attempted to do the misleading, for the advocates of better government had np or ganization, and no means with which to repel the qttucks of an insidious foe. They depended w holiy upon the good common sense of the plain people, and the result fully demonstrated that their confidence was not misplaced. Iu conclusion, we think we voice the sentiment of all that we have no two better citizens in the State than R. I. Manning and J. W. Uagsdale, but that they were defeated by two equal ly as good citizens goes to show that issues and not men were considered, qr the majorities re ceived by tl|0 two latfer named gentlemen would not have hpen so decisive. Poultry NotfN. If the chickens have nqt al ready been culled it is high time the work was being done. Young pnl lots and heus should not be fed in the same lot, as they require different arnqunts I of feed. flio sooner the poultry raiser secures a /lock of hens that lays largo eggs tho more pertain will be his profits from the eg" suu pi j. * 1 Ifavo everything in readiness tor winter before winter sots in. Cold ruins will bo?'in almost, be fore we know if, and fho hens will need a good house to pro tect them. T'ie selection of hens is a good way to dovolop the size of eggs. Kdich year those thai come near est laying the kind of eggs wanted should be kept for the next year's breeding pens. The most attractive poultry houso ever designed is of no value if the hens are not induced by the cq pi forts afforded to lay the lurgpst number pf eggs at. all seasons of tho yei*r. Never try to keep more hons during J-ho winter season than pap be proiierly cared for, and don t crowd them ip their win ter quarters Proper care g^ven to a few will returq more profit ^han a number neglected. Duy a trio of pqre-bred young birds before winter begins, givo good management and allow all tho comforts that can be afforded and vhe result will be largo, brood*i of pure- bred chicks next, spring. ? - 1 Wfjvtfllle Dot*. ?Mr. W. J3. & S. To All Democratic Voters. Washington, D. C., Aug. 15, '06. If there ever was a time in the* history of the Democratic party for the manifestation of loyalty and patriotism ou the part of its members, it is right now. If we are to wiu a victory and elect a President two jTears hence, we must first elect a House of Representatives this fall. A Democratic House can aud will investigate every department of the Government. With all of them honeycombed by "graft,** the edges of which, only, have been touched by reetnit exposure and prosecutions, there will be a revelation of rottenness that will astound the country and create a demand for a Democra tic administration to clean the Government workshop. To win the House we need mouey to defray legitimate ex penses and get out our vote. Wp have no protected monopo lies from which to draw to till our coffers, as they do those oi the Republican party. We must, therefore, appeal t<o loyal pemo crats for contributions. Will you send us $1.00 at once, and in return for this we will send you copies of our carapa.^n literature issued by the Commit tee. You will have the thanks of the entire Democratic party for your favorable response to our request. - Address all re mittances to J. M. Griggs, Chairman. Munsey Building, Washington, D. C. ??
