Speakiug now, simply us a /SUizen wjio tlv-njrs at least, that ,ho Is looking after tlie better ,111011 1 of political ami economic .conditions of his State, \ve want to go on rccord as dt.jii'ecating ?he violent attacks on certain newspapers made by a number of candidates for oftico in this campaign, in our judgment the .chances for nomination of these .candidates will not be improved Jby these tactics as the people ,don't care a snap what this or that paper has to say editorially .011 public questions, or about public men. They will think Lhat a candidate is hard put for ?something to say when ho takes up so much of his time iu abusing newspapers to the ex /elusion of vital issues, and will. ,/f they jj.ro the thoughtful peo ple wi give them credit Tor bo ing, f<?iL! a io we r opinion o? those camlidu Los who indulge i >1 ,?he practice. There are too many issues of particular mu jnont to discuss for caudidatcs to continue making grand staud ^ptays, ostensibly working them* pelves into a white heatcussiu' newspapers and mis discussing Jtue dispensary. While it is a fact, and a fact 4o be deplored that some editors /illow their personal feelings to ronter too largely into the mat ,ter of their editorials, it is equal ly a fact that in a majority of in stances the news columns of their papers are uncolored with the .exception on au occasional head which headline dosen't de rive one per cent of those who road the body of the matter printed. That these speeches have .weight with a certaiu class of ^oters, goes without saying. It ^s an easy matter for a plausible ySpeatcer to convince some men who are actually uot worth the powder and lead it would re quire to ici 11 them, that if they had their rights, they would be ^millionaires, but good citizens ,and sensible men take no stock .in tljp.t Sort of thing. That class, and we are glad to say that it is a majority class want logic and not rant from candidates. They .Want issues discussed, and not long tirades of abuse of editors of newspapers. During our ex perience of more than twenty years as a writer for newspapers, and as au editor, we have had oc casion to call (town rather sharp ly tho editors of more than one newspaper for promulgating edi torial matter which appeared to us to be unjust and misleading, ^ut wo never overlooked the fact? that these editors were per Jiapg at; honest as ourselves in ilie positions talcon by tUem. We simply thought them misl taken, and, to our satisfaction at ,Iea.st, proved them so iu U,e p?^. ;ic prints. This, if ;V0 ,?ay be .excused for saying it, is tiie position that all candidates for officio should take. If any can didate has a personal grievance against, a newspaper, it is en tirely legitimate for hiui to .either take it out. of the editor s hide, or t<? lambaste the paper to hi*, heart's content, liy all ;neans however, * pre if;/. Don't go down on them on genera! principle.* >is I lm people just /.von i ^OST JL'HVNDIAI, IMVJtKs KIONH. Wo give you below a synopsis pi **e impression made on the /Sklor of the Yorkvillo Enquirer by the several candidates for governor. The entire editorial the subject is good but is tpo Jong to give ip full. Here you have our sketch of it: Col. Jno. T. Sloan. ?Very clev *r, but above al/ a politician. ,W~?09 defined policy, fcut will follow wherever Jhe people lead. M. F. Ans^. ? In some re* ^peet? tl^e same type of rpan as Pol. Sloan, but wiser and pbler. Jlis actuating motive js ambition .which if gratified would prevent /ilrn from dishonoring the office, formerly a dispensary mpij merely because he thought the people satisfied with it Now opposed to the State institution because the people oppose it. Takes all tferusts given him by his oppoaents philosophically, knowing that all those left out in the first race will be his friends in the second. Mr. Joel A. Bronson. ? A can didate simply because of his de motion to the cause of prohibi tion. Would be perfectly willing f$r some ,otlier man to fill the governor's chair, always pro vided that the other man was a prohibitionist. J no. J. McMuhan. ? Brilliant, able, clean, but more theoretical than practical. As an instance of the theoretical side of his character, he believes that the State dispensary affairs can be honestly administered. McMa liau is full of great b;g progres sive ideas, aud believes in doing things. He won't be govornor, but is a good inau. Richard 1. Manning. ? A thor ough gentleman with all the word implies, but there is reason to believe that he is being used by others to further their own political schemes. It is more i thau suspected that the Manning ? liquor bill was not written by j him at all, but is a composite i product which doesn't reflect ? credit upon anyone that had a hand in its preparation. It is also believed that he has no feel; ing of enthusiasm 111 his support of a miserably poor makeshift of a miserable defense of a mis erable system. Cole L. Blease. ? A distinctly warm member. One of the finest. Tells the people that so far as he is personally concerned it makes no difference whether we have any liquor or not, as he seldom uses any, and within an hour will be as drunk as a biled owl. He wants the dispensary,' graft and all. Is under suspicion of having profited to the tune of several thousand dollars, more or less through its operations, and wouldn't give a snap for it if the graft feature was cut out. Good, Coley, keep it up. You may be governor, but we guess not. THE OREENWOOD LYNCH ING* Quite a lot is being said about the lynching of the negro, Bob Davis, at Greenwood last week for the usual crime. ' Governor Hey ward is coming in for numer our bouquets for his part in it. We can't join in the chorus of applause. It was patent to all that the negro was going to be lynched when caught aud identi fied as the proper person, so we think that the Governor had no place at. Greenwood at the time the lynching came off. Neither had the military any place there, and in not ordering them there we think Governor Heyward exercised good judg ment. Souio good men would perhaps have been killed or wounded, and no good accom plished, as no power 011 earth could have prolonged the life of the worthless brute who met his just, deserts. A fully identified ra visiter is more dangerous than a mad dog, and should be sum manly disposed of, law or no law. South Atlantic Inventors.
