"Wo give you in this issue a re .port of three hold-ups in the #<city of Columbia on last Satur day night. What are we going to do about this state of things in South Carolina? On every jhand, and in every section come accounts of murders, assaults, ^rapes and attempts at rape, ar .son, theft and every conceiva jble species or manner of crime. Again we ask, what are we ,to dp about it? As the majority of these crimes are committed % .within the corporate limits of some town or city, we throw out .the suggestion that a body of .secret police be organized in every community of the charac ,ters mentioned, whose duty it shall be to patrol the various sections not now under police .protection. Failing iu this, the ^citizens should assemble iu mass meeting and appoint a vigilance ^committee to perform the same ^duties. Either action would, we think result in the saving of valuable t lives and property. Thugs and .vagabonds of the type commit ting these crimes would have a wholsome dread of either secret police, or vigilants. For our part, while we are always fol klaw and order in dealiug with Criminals, we have come almost to the parting of thts ways, and honestly think that an orderly lynching bee for the benefit of a lew of these gentry of criminal propensities, would have a most salutary e fleet. ? We want to inform our friends that we have a pretty fair telephone 111 our oflice, so when you get hokl of a bit of news, phone it to us. It won't <x>st you anything and will help .us. Three hold* | ups, in three different localities, were reported to the police head quarters at the same time Sat urday night. About 8.30 o'clock Mr. Karl Haiti wanger, Mr. J. E. Matthews and Mr. C. T. Helms were each held up at the point of pistols and Messrs. Haiti wanger and Mutthews were rob bed but Mr. Helms resisted and gave the alarm and the robber ran, making his escape. ire# Men Foroed to Stand at Point of Herulrer.* The first two were robbed in North Columbia but iu different part of the suburbs, and the at tempt on Mr. Helms was on Pickens street between Blan ding and Taylor, very near the mess hall of the Presbyterian theological seminary. No ar rests have been made though the police are working on the cases. The robberfes of Mssrs. Halti wanger and Matthews were com mitted outside of the city limits and the police were unable to do much toward making arrests in those cases but eight men in plain clothes were hurried to the part of the city where Mr. Helms was attacked and the entire sec tion east of Main street was scoured but no arrests have been made. Mr. Haiti wanger is employed at the freight office of the At lantic Coast Line aud was on his way home from his work when he was held up. He had just left the street car and was walk ing along a side street wheu he met a man whom he described as being of stocky build and with a round face. He wore a dark suit of clothes and a low crowned hat. The mau approached him without attracting attention, un til Mr. Haltiwanger was startled to fiud himself facing a pistol and to hear a gruff command to put up his hands, which he did. The highwayman then stepped back a pace or two out of arms reach and, still covering his man sidestepped around behind his victim and, placing his pistol against Haltiwanger's body be tween the shoulders, held it with his left hand and went through al< of his pockets deftly and rapidly. Fortunately Mr. Halti wanger had but a few cents and two tickets to the theatre These the robber took, but he did not tnke the young man's watch. The watch was a cheap one and Mr. Haltw.ager asked him why he did not take it and the light fingered gentleman, after look ing at it, put it back in the poc ket from which he had taken it, remarking that lie did not want the d ? n thing. After going t hrough all of the pockets he ordered Haltiwanger to move on and stood, coveriug him with his revolver, until he had passed across the street. The robber then (Mime on toward the city. As well as could be ascertained the hold-up of Mr. Matthews was only a short while later than that of Mr. Haltiwanger and was in the direct route taken toward the city by the footpad who had robbed Mr. Haltwanger. The description given by both of the victims of the man who robbed them is practically the same and there is little doubt that the same man did both jobs. Mr. Matt bows is an employe of the National Loan and Ex change bank and resides noar t ho homo of Mr. Haltiwangcr in North Columbia, He was walk ing home and was going1 along north Main street a short dis tance beyond the old Monteith home, now occupied by Dr. Quat tlcbuum. A man, whom he took to be drunk, staggered toward him nnd when they came op posite, the supposed drunk man fell against Mr. Matthews and as ho did * so placed a pistol against his ribs and ordered "hands up." He wont through ! all of Mr. Matthews pockets in the usual way and relieved him of*!, which was all ho had at the time. While the highway man was going through the pockets of Mr. Matthews a bug gy passed, and pushing the pis tol a little closer ho told his vic tim that if he made an outcry he would kill him instantly The unsuccessful attempt to: rob Mr. Helms on Pickens street 'was only a little later. He was goinft north on that street when he noticed that a man turned iu from TJaylor street. ami followed him. Mr. Helms swopped and pretended to be pioidof op some thing:, when the mail belling him covered him wltft a pistol and gave tho usual order to "throw up your hands." Instead of obeying, Mr. Hfclms attempted to use a stick which lie carried but. the footpad struck him across j bis arm and knocked the stick ! out of liis hand, Mr. Helms be ing unarmed sprang behiud a tree and called for help. The robber took to his heels and rnu down Blanding street and dis appeared. It was said last night that another man who had boon held up waA u glass blpwer and he had been relieved of *41, but this could not be substantiated and at the police station the story was characterized rs a rumor. ?The State.
