THK DISPENSARY Senator Tillman in his speech at Greenville, when asked to skin JfcLaurin, thai I16 had nothing /but good to say of the dead, and that McLaurin was certainly politically dead. Tb this senti ment we largely agree, bat Mr. McLaurin in his previons speech tt the sane point gave voice to expression of opinion that our , senior senator should not have passed over so cavilairly. The remarks or headings we want es pecially to comment upon were those clauses in the dispedsary law that are supposed bQ the to best feature of the law. Merely to simplify theui, we ^ill give tliom as nearly as possi ble in the words on Hon. Cole L. Blease, Senator from Newber ry county tothe Newberry papers and reproduced elsewhere. Mr. Blease is an ardent dis])ensary ite and tai.es the remarkable posi tion that the prohibitionists in the legislature of 1802 are re sponsible for the passage of tho ?dispensary act. This is pure &ohs6nse. At that time, it was * case of "neck or no beef" with the prohibitiouists, and they knew that the powers that then Were had decreed that that monu mental humbug should be foist ed upon us as an experiment. To be as nearly fair in dealing with this subject as is possible We want to say that we endorse absolutely the theory of the dis pensary but we also waut to go on record as sa.yiug that its Chief promoters had never an idea of the theory being put in Active practice. It has been a ^ase of grab and graft from the Start. A number of men have Aiade fortunes out of it we are fold who would have laughed At taking a position with it had the total emoluments of the of . Aces they filled been the simple ( 4alary attached to theifi. What we wanted particularly tb say that Senator Tillman in Jbis letter to Mr. Higginson on the dispensary utterly failed to particularise on the salient fea tures of the law. In other words fie generalized, charging some pody somewhere with being cor \ *upt, and holding out the big v4tick. Colo Dlease didn't do that, gle came out openly and fairly, if |jllhappily in favor of this un happy institution, giving the following as a few of bis reasons for supporting it ; Ihe .evils of the old bar Hnttem. Jn addition Ui<> above rea ms, Mr. tileaso ok initiates on I* tremendous revenue that is rived by the State from the ?JHc to tt?o schools of the state id counties. Holding the opiu ms we do on this subject, we rowld th.ink'that ,the parents of ly child'whois being educated Ahis kind of inonrty would up in the morning with btdark brown taste in their i\t Ahatxwily a half glass of tfould clear out. This may be re peated several times, with the consequence of several men half drunk or more before moving ten steps out of their tracks, when if they had had the privi lege of' taking a''single drink each, no one would have been hurt. We will only dignify reasons 3 to 7 by calling attention U> them. TILLMAN'S DISPENSARY LETTER. Senator Tillman's recent let* tier on dispensary subjects is admirable as a piece of composi tion and superb as a straddle. He says that if it is not reform ed by ne*t year he will fight it. This, interpreted, it seems to us means that between now and the date Of the next primary, there will be a sham effort made at reformation, but this effort will not fool the Senator, so if he keeps his word we may con fidently expect to see him op posing the G. M. I. and favoring what? We don't Know. PK1ZE OFFER. Who wants The People a year for nothiug?
