! % The People C A TuTDTTNT. SOUTH O A HOT ?TTT^. rr a tjtt a T9rr B, 190C Marriage. On Wednesday the 26th. ult. at Lancaster, S. G. Mr. Howard E. Chapman and Miss Marion E. Thomson were' joined in the bonds of matrimony. Mr. Chap man is employed in The Bank of Spartanburg where the young: couple will make then* home. Th^ bride is the eldest daughter of our old friend and comrade of early years, Mr. W. C. Thomson,, who is one of the most promi nent citizens and busiuess men ot his adopted city, Lancaster. We hear that the attachment be tween the couple which has just resulted in such a liappy culmi uation was formed at Greenville, where the groom graduated from Furman University, his beauti ful bride at the same time finish ing her course with honor at the Greenville Female College, both events occurriug last year. We wish them happiness galore, and a pathway through life strewn with many roses and few thorns. Masonic Banquet. It has boon the custom with Kershaw Lodge No. A. P. M. to hold an annual banquet at or near the close of each year, and this year marked no exception to the custom. That given on last Friday was something great. We are not much on attending these functions, but are glad to say that we did attend this one, and enjoyed o-irselves to the utmost. The feast was bouutiful; and tire speeches on the occasion deliver ed by several of the brethren were, with one exception, of a high order, breathing as they did in every word Masonry as it should be practiced in every day . life. The Bear dance was an other prominent feature of the evening, A number of our tour ist brethren were with us, and seemed to enter fully into. .the] spirit of the occasion. After sever alh ours of unalloy ed enjoyment, the happy com pany wended their way home ward after the singing oi! "Auld Lang Syne". Death of Mr. 12. S. Ymix. No recent death has caused more genuine sorrow to the en tire community than that of" Mr. E. S. Vaux on Thursday, the ^9th inst. For several days pre vious to his death, the worst was feared, but his friends continued to hope almost against, hope that God in his mercy would spare his useful life. All in vain His earthly body now occupies that narrow house of which all of us must sooner or later become a resident, while his immortal spirit is, we hope, with Him who gave it being. During a comparatively brief residence among us, Mr. Vaux had built up an enviable refuta tion for uprightness, business talent and rare social and per sonal qualities. We, with all those with whom he came into business or social contact, mouru his untimely death. The funeral services over the body were conducted at the Epis copal church on Friday, and the remains taken to Charleston for burial. Requital in Pace, Lost. A white setter dog with black right ear. We are at limes amused and at others annoyed by our friends coming to us complaining of con ditions existing iu certain quart ers, tliey-, seeming to be some what hot in thecholer, and jump ing on us with "Capt. Schroclc, you oujght to call attention in your paper to_so and so. It is a shawtt .ttdft t his should be thus*'. Our almost invariable reply to these remarks, is, "write me" a letter fojf publMUtion', embodying your coihjiiirfjtt. I will, investi gate the riifttter, and if I Hud that you hidie just cause to com plain, I wilfcpublish your letter and make editorial comment on U". This seems to us to be a fair proposition,, and we want to say that any citizen who has a griev ance should expect no more from an editor. We have certainly done our share of. "knocking," and hereafter, unless the inntter ap|>eui;ing in OpiiV columns has come under our irti mediate ob sersation, we will do no more of it. This is tinhl. We did not sot out in boginning the pub lication of The People to make enemies, but on the other hand to make friends. Hlrtii.
