Flue Beef Cattle. At this seasou of the year the eyes of all turu to good beef, Mess. E. S. Nettles and Son have just purchased the choicest lot of fine beef cattle that we have seen anywhere. No advice is necessary as to what to do when you are 111 want of anything along that liue from braiu to material substance. Another Warning. We have just experienced the pain of the toss of our fourth sub scriber by deutli since beginning the publication of The People. Ah, in the other cases already reported, the last one had not paid his*ub sci iption. This oc currence should serve as a sol emn warnito all our unpaid subscribers to come in and pay up. This item limy sound to some, a gruesome joke, but we do not inteud it that way, as we ure really superstitious in the matter. TRESPASS NOTICE. We hope that "J?M will hsve ? plesssnt trip, snd s ssfe return. ?We bed the plessare of vrsv log our hand only to Mr. B. P. Ticlroor when he psidf s flying visit to the burg last week. The1 results of his visit will be soen * when that twelve room cottage i is erected. ? ?Mr. T. A. Myers, father of our chief typo was with us ? day or so last week. He is now en gaged in work with the Betts Lumber Co., of Sumter. Weare old chums, and are always glad to see him. ?Dr. J. T. Cottrell has return-1 from a very enjoyable trip to old Tennessee. We are ploased to have hiin back. The absence of the Doctor from Camden creat es an acheing void that is never tilled until he returns. ?Mr. Joel Hough, our Clerk of Court, has been quite ill with a severe attack of malaria, which fact necessitated the services of his son at the term of court last week. We hope our old friend will soon regain his usual health. ?Mr. BrooKs Morgan, Assist ant General Passenger Agent of the Southern Railway, accom panied Mr. Hunt on the occasion of his call ou us, and we are glad to number him amoug the new acquaintances we have made of whom we want to see more. ?Mr. W. O. Miller, who lias been engaged with the Camden Drug Co. here, returned to his former home at Newberry lust week. We are sorry to lose Mr. Miller as he is a clever gentle man, and a favorite with the feminine portion of our commu nity. ?Our cousin, Mr. Gus Young, (a sou of Mr. William Young, formerly a well known citizen of Camden), accoraiuinied by his wife, of Jacksonville, Fla., s|>ent a few days of this aud lust week with relatives here. This is Mr. Young's rirst visit to Camden, since he left here fifteen years ago. ?Mr. R. W. Hunt, Division Passenger Agent of tire South ern Railroad. p;?id us a call on last Thursday. We were i?ar ticularly pleased to meet him, especially as, during the course of conversation, he made us a certain promise, and as lit can look a man squarely in the eye, we have no doubt it will be kept promptly. ?Mr. S. H. Ives, an old Con fed, who formerly lived at this place, but who now hails from Ojus, Fla. was here last week after an absence of more than twenty years. Naturally he found a new city, but he also found a number of old friends and comrades who made his visit pleasant. Like all men of his enterprising character, he sub scribed and paid tor The People "before his departure. ?We were m ich pleased to meet Mr. D: J Johnson, of Clyde, 8. C. on last Monday, and regret the serious injury he sustained iu a cutting affray with Mr. 13. A. Clan ton. The difficulty occurr ed we understand over a trivial matter, sonething like the divid ing of the wish bone of a ten year old hen, Mr. Clanton's knife slip ping, aud cutting Mr. Johnson's finger severely At last accounts the injured man was doing well. ltox Supper. A very pleasant "Box Supper" was given at the residence of Mr. J. A. Johnson on last Friday tii?rht, to raise funds to erect a few around the country at Mar shalls Church. About Forty Dollars was received. IIIrtliM. We have been recently accused of having in our paper uo'l ing of peculiar interest but a rocord of births, and we acknowledge, thr soft hiiftrtirhincut, in port mil;/. It. is with pleasure however that we record the fact of four births in the Carson Section last week, aud we extend congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Cato, Ross Hilton, John Harmon and Rob ert Muugo. We want t'? : uy just here, that when we go io the Legislature two years hence, we propose to have aspecial law |>assed requiring the publication of these occurrences in the most prominent county iNi)ier in each county, aud naturally in Ker shaw county, we exi?ect to se cure the job. Further Improvement*. We learn thftt Contractor W. O. Adams has just taken a con tract for the erection of a 12 room cottage for C. Tickuor and Hon, and for a 7 room building ot the same chaructor for Mrs. McSmyrl on Lyttlefon Street; also, that Mr. G. H. LeNoir has given out a contract to Mr. H. 8. I>unlap, contractor for a 5 room cottage. Contractor Deal, too, has a new contract, but the name of the party giving it out has at this moment escaped us. All this is as it should be. As one of our correspondents wrote us a shoit time ago, let the good work go on. BREVITIES. I ?The ^'Victor" spring bed tiverM b| Mr GeieenheioH r is tttkinx beautifully with all the people. ?To paraphrase (he familiar sentence, "Now is the tis*e for all goo^ ipMk to come to the aid of tue party,** we will say, "Now is the time for all unpaid sub scribers to comeN to the aid of The People.** ?We have not beard that any juryman was fined for tardiness in making his Appearance at the opening of court this week or last, if not, we may ascribe the fact that the Judge himself was equally culpable, and *'a fellow feeling makes us wondrous kind." ?For the acme of comfort, buy a "Victok" spring bed. For the sick tor well, for the married or single, nothing equals ?t. ?We want to say that the members of our local bar are, as a rule, to be commended for their quickness in disjMitcliing busi ness that they may have before our courts. They fully apprt ciate that "the law's delays'' are dangerous, and prepare theu - selves in advance to avoid them. ?We have another surprize for our people within the next month if we can make the pro ]>er collections in that period. When we pet started there is no stopping us, but the people must back us up. We are not a Rock afeller, nor any kin to liiin, so unless we was in that financial class, we connot be expected to work wouders on wind only. ?Do not^leep or try to sleep any longer on a comfortless bed when the "Victou" is in your reach. Go to Mr. Geisenheimer's and secure oue while titoes are pood. ?It is exasperating, to say the least of it that one lawyer should, by taking advantage of certain little technicalities of t he law, be allowed to block for two duys last week, the criminal busi ness that should have come up before Judge Purdy. Down with technicalities. A court room is supposed to be a Temple of Jus tice. Is it? ?If our subscribers could real ize the inconvenience that we are often subjected to because of slowness in collecting, they would all come forward prompt ly uud settle up. We are trying to give you all kinds of a good paper, and your appreciation of it as expressed by the payment of a paltry sum of onedollar and a half (*l.r>0) will receive due appreciation by us giving you a larger, and better one. ?Do you rest badly? Do you get up iu the moruing with a tired feeling? The "Victou'' spring bed will cure bo'hlevils to health 'and happiuess. Mr. Geisenheimer has them. >See him at once. j ?We call attention to the con stunt repetition of the pronoun ?*we" ut the commencement of oar items under the head of "Brevities," but we cannot re sist another op|>ortunity for re peating il in this column. Mr wunt our legislature to levy a special license of not less than $1,000 on loug-winded and tech nicalitorial lawyers, who come jto practise in our courts, which shall be a bond to cover the ex I i>eiise incurred by their privilege in so practicing, the full air ount if so much be necessary to be covered into the county treasury by reason of dilatory motions, and in other ways obstructing the legitimate business of the court.
