;?
^ The dispatches from Augusta pub
? lished in tbo South Carolina papers o"
jjj the dispensary in North Augusta
I caused Representative Crott Tuesday
\ to rise to a question of personal priv
liege and vigorously to denounce cer
tain reflections which lie said had
; been cast upon him.
* Last week when Mr. Lane of Marl
boro had passed a resolution condein
ning the action ol the Aiken county
f board, in establishing the dispensary
a* North Augusta, as undemocratic,
Mr. Croft who was out of the house
at the time, had the resolution ic
called later and taken from the record
In the course of his remarks Mr,
Croft said that he had as attorney
represented to the Aiken boird that
the dispensary should he established
and that certain ministers had staled
that while they were willing for (a
dispensary to be established at llamp
tgti Terrace hotel they we e not wi!
ling for it to he established in the
y town of North Augusta.
It was this statement that caused a
dispatch to he sent, out from Augusta
stating that the ministers el Augusta
were indignant and would s*nd a com
miltce to Columbia, at the same time
> Charging that Mr. Croft waj a re pre
t sentallve of liquor interests.
Mr. Croft said that he had h^cii
K&WOOIT mm m iii?"3U liia
patches and he would have liked very
much to lace this Augusta committee,
, wliie at the last moment failed t<
turn up. lie wished to say that lie
represented no Ihpor interests, that
, he had appeared before the board
' without even accepting a fee, although
lie would have been justified in taking
one for ids legal woik, and any state
incut to llie contrary could be notli
ing but a deliberate lie. i he Augus
| la interests had siiowti themselves
I decidedly lacking in courtesy, to say
the least in ill *, statements they have
sent ou*. to prejudice the general
assembly.
Mr. Croft then, road statements
from the Aiken pipers, which he said
had been written by a prohibitionist
which substantiate his position and
he presented ailidavits along the same
line.
Afterwards tlie house passed a
resolution indorsing tlie statement
made by the Aiken representative
and exonerating niin.
The committee which had come
here ?o present allidavits against Mr.
Frost had not submitted them.
