Good correspondents wanted in Lexington, Aiken ami Saluda Counties. Wednesday, (July, O, 1J)02. We sincerely trust that the people of Lexington county will aid l>r. ltrooker in his work of compiling "Scraps of History." This is an im portal)t matter that should appeal to the pride of our people. Wherever possible, let those in possession of sketches send them to Dr. Hrooker. There is no man in the county better prepared to do this needed work than he is. Wo have urged this work upon our readers before. We wish our friend all possible success, as he so riciily deserves. We understand tliat the promoters of the proposed electric railway from Lexington to Columbia are meeting with substantial encouragement, both from local and foreign capitalists. AA'e sincerely trust that this undertaking will bo a reality. That it will prove a financial success to the stockholders there can be no doubt, for it will run through a thickly settled truck farming section as can he found in the State. AA'e wish the gentlemen all pos silile success and tru.it that it will not only reach our county sent, but pw h on to our little city. Our people, he it said to their! eredit, measure men for their worth. The hospitality of the town was up to its usual custom and the candidates left our county coa-cious of the fuel that no kindei treatment, or more attentive audiences, had tn ;*t tliein elsewhere. It seems tlint the original forestso this section were peculiarly suited t the growth of heroes, as our generoii lVasliitigti.il would no doubt have ae milted, though after his famous visl to South Carolina in May, 1781, he en tercd the following in his journal: "Tlio entire road from Augusta to Colntubi is a i>inc-l>nrreii oi the worst sort." Perhaps our truthful President's sen tinients migh very well In.ve been tx nressed in t!u? v\i?ril?i of ???? r?1?l Vili?? MM v,w *^ubv field planter: "KUgctlelil district, Trenton town. Well, it was either steal or woil very hard, and of course our peopi chose the latter?working with th same energy that that they fought they soon attained the same reward victory, and seventy-live years aftei the devolution, a person passing through this section would hardlj have associated it with t ho "pine barren, ''with its broad plantations am paint ial <ountiy homes, pr-sided ovei by those "01' Massa's" and "Ol' Mis sits' " that the slave-time negro loves so much to "mimic'* over when he tells about "detn good ol' linns befo de wa'," When the war cloud that bad long been hanging over the States burst in all its black fury our boys, true chips of tlie old Revolutionary block, were among toe llrst, to hear the cal1 to arms, donned the grey, ami with steel courage stood to their arms, encouraged a^i I applauded by wives, mothers and sisters. More than a thousand of our bravest and best men volunteered at Ml. Willing and enter cti the Civil War. A small per cent, of that number returned to 11 nd their farms devastated and their families reduced topennery. Overcome, not conquered, nothing daunted, they went to work with re| lentless energy and a few short years I saw schools springing up here and there, churches organized and evidences of thrift and culture on every side. When, in 1 si>0, tlie railroad was comI pleted through this section, a new impetus was added to industry and tlie beautiful little towns of Hutesburg, jLeosville and Iinlg??
