In an argument, our esteemed con temporary, The Chester Lantern, reminds us of a didapple in the way hi tries so innocently and unconcernedly to dodge the issue. We had no ide: of imputing to The Lantern the origin of the charge that Hon. A. F. Liver had used whiskey in his recent canvas for Congress. We merely em- I phasized our having seen the chargi flrat in The Lantern, because w? wished to lay stress upon the unreliability of news that reaches the community that is concerned in such a rumor first through the columns of ? oewspapei in a different section of the State. The charge that is noted reads thus (from memory) : "Congressman Lever is out in a can denying the charge that he used whiskey in his recent campaign for Congress."?Press and StunUard. Directly under this short clipping The Lantern made some comments, in part thus: "It is seldom charged that whiskey has been used in the interest of a candidate when the charge is not true. . . .... Of course, he conceals his con nection with such election methods, but politicians generally are in very close touch with their heelers, and few of these pay expenses out of their own pockets." "But, upon the whole (please note this!) it is in the interest of public policy to charge this form of corruption to the man in whose interest it is used." Now, from that we very naturally concluded that The Lantern was ap piying nis remarks to Mr. Lever's recent canvas, and we do not think our conclusion so very strange in that re spect. The Lantern, in reply to our last article defending the campaign and character of Mr. Lever against such an imputation, has this to say: "The remarks that Mr. Lever had fmblishsd a card of denial was the ony sentence In which The Lantern had any tpteial reference to Mr. Lever, and the fact was mentioned solely to furnish a basis for some remarks ol general application . Every word that followed was directed against a form _?.?_? n|.y one knowg It is equally ne of the git to t he repSeventh Dis> might come inent, and our irrelevant as es to got out ' lamely sayIhe fact solely lie rem: rks ol i'e i an hardly 11 so exactly nnarks" from excerpt first em, any one i of a power a conclusion The Lantern lief that Mr. in his imiiilad concealed ins connection wun such election *** methods." The Lantern has a v ery peculiar and illogical way of making some general remarks from a basis, | which he does not know to he true, j a ml at the same time he says his remarks hare no "special reference to ktbe representative from the Seventh District"?the whole foundation ol his "basis." Again, how can anv one understand otir erratic contemporary j to exclude Mr. Lever, when he state-I that, "upon tlie whole, it i, in the interest of public policy f? charge this form of corruption to the man in whose interest it is used."? lines l:? make any exception here? Would not you conclude that The Lantern was oi the opinion that it was "in the interest of policy " to charge this form m corruption up to Mr. I,ever, if wl Iskey was used? We reasonably and logical- I ly conclude that. Even then, we say that such a charge is unjust, unfair, and unreasonable. Mr. Lever should not be held responsible for a campaign fone which lie knew nothing of, and which lie most positively did, and ( ( does still, disapprove. Admitting the sincerity of on friend, we were of the mind to end i' right there, accounting his </umil re ^ murks to his abi ity to separate them from a "special basis"?thinking. ( however, that, wlnl o ir reasmiiig ittay be "strange," that of The Lantern is stranger. But The Lantern's L 11 |A*t sentence hat caught our eye, reading thus: "When our esteemed contcmpor ry D ^kssys he did not spend one red cent for 5f|g|y$^^?rnIskey, we have no suspicion that it means oy thin that he pins Ins faith t.> L the white metal. ' While our icasoning iiuiv appear to y< be "strange" in the noliony and llexi- " ble cerebrum of our contemporary, C( we tope w<> may not be ennsidertMl, by otlieis, erratic follower of the teachOgs of Aristotle if v/e accept one of ej I ? two conclusions from this last sentence. Kither The I.anleru is very insincere in it? denial of having had no "special reference" to Mr. Lever, 01 else the editor is woefully ignorant of i simple rhetorical construction. It the former ue true, a month's trgu ing with him would be in .vater on a goose's bacK; if the latter be more likely, we suggest to our friend that he make a "general" stud^ of figure? of speech as a whole and r .1 ? ..1)1 I -f It-- 1 u. oj/rviuf uraiK'ii ui inv iiiTiim in*. I'he aforesaid information can be ol taiued from any high echool rhetoric. The "Cherry-tree Scheme" lias been done for. in the last ten days union? newspapers of the state. It is a fraud surely.
