' i Tho Baptists of South Carolina are planning for a great drive for education this fall. During: Sentem* ber. October and November of this vear they propose to cover the state with a hand to hand canvass for three hundred and fiftv thousand dol larc to cover the indebtedness of their institutions and to add to their endowment. The Baptist domination. which aggregates about onr hundred and sixtv- thousand mem- . bers in this state, is <~-^eratincr fiva colleges and fiva acedemies. These properties together with their endow , ments are worth one million. eie'ht hundred and sixty two thousand, sev en hundred and sev^tv dollars! This is no small investment.for one denomination to make in education in this state! It will be seen there n r'flrf fho 1 Irid anted oV two hundred thousand dollors is ouiv a little over ten per cent of the value of their school and colleee nro pertv. These debts were incurred ft r buiidiners and improvements made necessary bv their erowinyr na tronacre. Thev do not represent fail ure of these institutions t-> meet current expenses! Our People need to appreciate the yreat work of the Christian denominations are doing in the field of education in this state. There are four teen colleges supported bv the ve.iip'As denominations in this state five bv tile BuDtiots. three bv the Methodists: two bv the Presbyterian:two u>* til ft. k o ana two bv the Lutherans and these coleaes are giv inc college training to more thar half the college men and women of the Statj! The Batista alone are nroviding college facilities for nearPv one fifth of'al! our college studentThis is no small service theie denomi nations are rendering to the state of South Carolina! Our whole population need: to be stirred on the subiect of education South Carolina now has the er.vi able distinction of standing at the bot to of the list of all the states on the. Union in the matter of literacv. South Carolina has to her shame twentyfive ner cent of illiteracy according to the last Census report: the largert per cent of illiteracy of anv state in the Union. This means that twenty five Per cent of our citizens can neither read nor write. This condition constitutes our Greatest problem and our Gravest nerii. Surely everv na triotic and Christian citizen in this state oucht to crive encouracrcment to verv educational endeavor put forth in this state. In this particular movement everv Baptist is a under obligation to do his best t{ make this effort a e-xat success. To make the task as easv as possible and in order not even to seem to ' be in conflict with the Government in its sal of Libertv Bonds and Wai Stamps they are sroinr to accept Libertv Bonds and War Stamps for cash and will make ail notes navablp in Libertv Bonds and War Stamps. These bonds will rot be rut on the market durimr the war.Bv this meth od a man can serv- a doubl purpose with his money. If he rmts a hundred dollars in Libertv Bonds It will be worth a hundred dollars to his Govern and if he Gives this bond tc the schoolr. It will be worth a hundred do! lacs to them. ITer.ee the one hundred dollar: will do two hundred do] lurs '.corch of work. This arer.t cam.paiirn is under the direction of the Baptist Education Board of Columbia: of which Dr. Chas. A. Jones is secretary and trea.urer. This effort deserves the Greatest success.
