UNCF Campaign
Opens
NEW YORK—A larger goal will
be sought this year by the United
Negro College Fund in its annual
nationwide campaign, to meet in
creased operating costs among its
31 member colleges. The quota for
the 1954 appeal is $1,750,000, or
approximately ten per cent of the
colleges’ combined operating bud
gets, it was announced here today
by John W. Hanes, National Cam
paign Chairman and Vice-Presi-
f dent, Olin Industries, Inc. The cam-
'paign will open on Tuesday, April
5, with a specail meeting at 4 p.m.

Hanes explained, “to meet increas
ed operating costs now confronting
the institutions which are members
of the Fund. In addition, the grow-

school students each year seeking

Organized Fund appeals will be
made in 90 major throughout the
country, as well as in the com
munities where the 31 colleges are
located.

Pumps - Open and Closed
This Spring you have a tremen

Throat lines are either round or
square, and the latter come in nar
row, medium and wide. So you’re

new patterns with spotlight on the

Heels are causing a stir in leath
er pumps this Easter. They range
all the way in height from the
v-e-r-r-r y tall to the almost flat
pancake. When you hear keg don’t
think of beer this spring. Together
with pyramid and barrel they are
terms for the varying heels, and
they look just as you would think
from the name. The built-up leath
er heel is at the pinnacle of its
popularity. So much so that you
find it only in the medium and low
heights, but in the slim heels as
well.
And if you like a little frou-frou
on your pumps, you can have ap-
pilques in one or two colors, varied
lacing, jewels, embroidery, buttons,
buckles and so on.
Sandal - Stripping and Strapping
If you’re the gay and airy type
and prefer leather sandals, this is
the year for you. The T-strap, a
high fashion hit last lear, is hot
news in all lines this Spring.
