ing this account of the luws of which 1 was
myself the mover and draughUman, I, by
no means mean to claim to myself the me
rit of obtaining their passage. 1 had many
occasional and btrcnuou* coadjutors in
debate, and one, most steadfast, able and
zealous; who was himself a host. This was
(ieorge Mason, a nmn ot the first order of
wisdom among those who nctcd on the the
atre of the revolution, of expansive mind,
profound judgement, cogent in argument,
learned in the lore of our former constitu
tion, and earnest for the republican change
of democratic principles. His elocution
was neither flowing or smooth; but lus lan

him as in high esteem, and I think it cer
tain that lie has mere of the Count dr. Flo
rida Hlanca's Incwldiip than any diplomat-'

minister i* in office, Carmichael can do no

He is light, indiscreet, active, honest, affec
tionate. Though Hingham is not in diplo

morning a later party of ladies and gentle
men embarked in the new steamboat Ohio,
for Albany and Troy. They were 44 a gay
and gallant company," and of some ot them
it might be said thev moved " with shouts
that rent the air;" the air however stood it
very well, and so did the boat,, infant as she
<tt-she underwent the ceremony of intro
duction to ttoclety with much eaee. We
have nothing to say of the iaunt up the riv
er, inasmuch as we saw nothing new. Uls
ter county was still on the west side of the
Hudson, mid sailing with the tide was much
quicker work than sailing utfaintt it. This
wma the case last summer.
The boat approached no nearer the north
pole tKan Trov, although some of the com
pany cxpcctcd that she was going to Niag
ara by the way of Saratoga Springs, and

The Ohio is intended as a night boat.
She has been constructed more with a view
to comfort than show. Her cabins are well
arranged?she has a fine promenade deck,
and an unusual number of births. She* is
unquestionably a very rumfnttable boat.
Wo have Keen considerable speculation
as to tlm cause which induced (Jen. Hous
ton to rc.sigu the Chair of Chief Magistrate
of our State. We select tho following from
the New Orleans Argus, April as al>out
the worst representation : It appears tliat
the Governor disappointed in not receiving
a portion with a young lady of respcttahlo
family, whom lie married about tliree
months ago, or for Nome other motive, had
publicly calumniated and defamed his wife
?at which the sovereign people were ?o
indignant, that they hurnt the Governor in
eOigy in several places. At Nashville
troops were railed out to prevent a similar
execution."
That the foregoing paragraph hears
falsehood on its face in its most jialpalde
colour* there is not a doubt. Wo have
never beard it stated before that the cause
of Cien. Houston's quitting his home was
because ho was " disappointed in receiving
a portion" with his lady. Hon. II. was
not " burnt in effigy in several places" as
stated by tho Argus ; und at no place that
we have ever heard, was the attempt made
save in tho vicinity of Gallatin where the
fronds, fee. of his lady reside. The circum
stances which occasioned the course (Jen.
II. has pursued we have never heard folly
developed, but can say from what we have
been told, that they are different from the
causes stated in the quotation. He hat left
us to seek among the untutored children of
the forest that felicity his home once pos
sessed, but now denies. He has the sym
