Swatow, which was thrown open to foreigners by the treaty of Tientsin, fa situat ed at the mouth of the river Han. near the eastern . border .ot / the Kwanjctung province. It is the shipping port for the city of Cha’o- chow-fu, the seat of Ihe local govern ment, 25 miles inland, and San-Ho- Pa, 40 miles father up the river. Sawtow is built on the northern bank of the Han^ river, which forms part bf an alluvial plain through which the branches of the river flow.
