June 16.— Kditor The Press and Stundyrd: In teply to yours of recent oW re- iiuesrifif? that 1 write The Press and Standard something concerning the officer’s training camp here. Mill say that -it always gives me pleas ure to.use the columns of Polleton’r valQable paper. It is not only a •pleasure, hut a privilege as well to give the people of the. county some idea of our life and work through that medium. As far as I am concerned, per sonally, am glad to say that one ob ject has been sought after and prac- liced. t<» a very great extent, and that object 's to- adopt myself to any circumstance. To say the least, this trait has stood me in very gqod here, because aside from everything being strange and new, there is also an immense lot of work4o do. How ever the fellows seeir^ to be standing it mighty wrell so far. It is true that a good number of them have been compelled to leave, but this wras due mainly to some physical de fect, or to their lack of some of the - other requirements. Taken as a whole we have a splendid set of men In the camp. They vary in the walks of life, ranging anywhere from mill hands to state senators. They .are to be turned into officers to train and officer the army that our government is to draft and send to France. The commanding offi- CCf, Col. 11. J. Slocum, however, seems to be w‘*ll satisfied with the progress made so far. This has been greatly facilitated by the class of m**n here, and by their eager ness •to learn the science of wa v - fare. % Kverythinc at the camp is done in a very systematic * and military manner. There can be no hesita tion and waiting when orders at? given.^ or when the bugle call*. ‘Precision, accuracy and attention to details are some of the ideas that have been drilled into us so far. We have quite a varied program for each day. The first call for re veille is at. 5:15 a. m. We then have about 1M*. minutes of setting up exercises before breakfast. This is served at 6 a. m\ At 7 o’clock we form for- drill until 11:30. At l-* o’clock we have recess. Then at 1:50 p.» m. we fall in for study drill, patrol or some othhf exercise until 4:5o. After supper, 5:30 p. m., we have about two hours at study, or lecture in the amphithea tre. This program approximates what we have each. day. except Sat urday and Sunday. On Saturdays, we have only five hours work. This consists of inspection, or hiking with full pack..! Weginnlng this week we will take up such train- -ing as trench digging, skirmishing, et<*/ The men's morals are looked af ter very particularly here. This seems to he the case in all army camps at present. The Y. M. C. A. has this in charge. It has erected an excellent building for us. They have furnished it with a piano, vie- trola. tables, writing material.’*maK- a»ines. papers, etc. These things, with’the free movies about once each week, serve well to break the monotony of camp life, The fel lows make it a kind of social cen ter We a><‘ given free concerts, lectures, etc . under the auspieces of of the Y. M C. A. So too much calinot be said in |M;aise of the work it is doing Just a word as to our fond. >t rations as it Is called in army lang uage. We are allowed 7ri cents each per day, or about $55 50 p*.| month for our table board. .The mess halls are very nicely ai ranged buildings. They are long, and-have- two tables on each Side. Th te are 15 such halls, and each is built to accommodate about 175 men. Kadi mess is directly in front of its series of barracks. Kach series of liar tatks, and-mess, are fot a conipanv. , .\s to our status. We are not (hissed as "rookies." or •‘‘privalex." but. the authorities were kind enough to classify us as "cadets.’’ We have a distinctive hat cord. It is red, white and blue, and eaeh of tiw wears it with quite "a hit of pride We.'too, me to have r distinct de sign of insignia. We nil claim that Oglethropi- the best training camp in the conn trv.'and undoubtedly this i« true, t el Slocum, and the other officers nre always doing all in theii power to improve conditions. They im press the men with the sole Idea of being as near perfect as possible. Col. Slocum never loses an nppor- | tunitv of driving this message hotpe. hast nigiit in making a few farewell remarks to the engineers, and coast artillerymen, who were preparing to leave for other camps for special training, he said that if it v ere a banquet he would propose t fnllov ing toast: "Wi cone in to t’ i-. world, naked and hate: we thru it ’with sorrow ;lr.d ca ,- e ' a 1 11 :i"\ ■ .t te X 1 WC #. n nv not i w ; ■ •' tl.i. oug’ 1 r-'d • ' W .
