t. ’• ) PAGE TWO THE PEESS AND STANDARD Wednesday, April 26. 1916 VOTEFOR AN OPEN UTTER / V • p V. FOR AYOR AND A PROGRESSIVE <tr To the Qaalified Electors of Walter* boro: • * • • Ai one of the qu&li’fied elector* in the approaching town election, it will be your duty to aseist in yhoo*-, .ing the men who will, a*-official* of the town, have in charge the admin istration of the government of the town. This is an obligation which I know you prise highly, and one which carries with it grave-respon- s.bilitiee. for after you have voted the matter passes out of your hands for the next two years, and the men you elect will stand in your place to . * govern the town. Xf you choose w isely and well the town' will pros per under good government: if you do not. then town will suffer un der poor government. Walterboro has made .splendid growth in the past few years, and those who govern after the present officials will have in hand the task of keeping the town in its progres sive path., Tou should, therefore, carefully study the character and ability of every man who is a candi date for' official position in the town government and conscientiously vote for such of them as will do most for the welfare of the town. There ehould be no place in this for a vofe of prejudice or for personal reason*: This is one time eve-y voter shoptd rise above personal feelings and'east ? ballot in favor of the best tnen in the race, not only to? Mayor hut for members of Council.- / I am a candidate'for the office of Mayor. If I measure up to the re quirements you think such officer should popeess. I shall appreciat- your support in the .coming town .tlecjiojr^ If I do not. end you think anyohe of*the other candidates wi’’ tener fill the positions then vote fo. /him. If elected I shall continue to stand for those things which will up build our town and community. It shall be my desire and effort to en force the ordinances of the towa - without fear or favor, and to give the town a clean and progressive administration. To.that end I shall de«ire to work with those organiza tions.‘and agencies in town whic*» stand for what is best an«ymost pro gressive. - — - ^ With the amount of bonded in debtedness over the town. It is nec essary that the most rigid economy in all matters be practiced in order that the interest may be paid, and a sinking fund created to pay off these obligations as they become due. - A good business adminUtratign is. therefore, essential. I believe in doing each year permanent work on our street*, rather than spend gll the revenue of/the town in doing work which Is not pertnanent in it* ta- ture. To tki* end I favor putting down a *mall section of paved streets each year, as well as extend ing the length of the paved side walks. . In other words, my desire, a* Mayor of Walterboro. shall be to promote the' welfare of the town in every way possible, and to cement the good fellowship which should exist between the town land sur-- rounding country. . The voters know me and what I stand for,, as roost of them are familiar with' my views as expressed from time to'tipie In the columns of The Press and Standard^- I am a candidate on my merits, and am not.running on any demerits r.f opponents. They krf both honor able men and would ffp as I shall, if elected, the best th»y rar. .'for the town. I have not a word of censure for them. * Respectfully. W. W SMOAK. J PRES.
