At that tlsae The Press and Staadard was owned by B. O. Price. Esq,, pad It warvader the personal direction of this good aua that I learned to love tlTe business. When I entered the office there wetfe three learned and skilled bmb la there, vis! Charlie Rice, R. A. Grant and J. L. B. War ren. Mr Pries worked la the of fice whoa necessary, bet his time was mostly taken up with the besi- ness end. Mr. Grant waa the fore man. Mr. Rice, compositor, and Mr. Warren the II neat and earnest edi tor. • At that time fire were la the * old office near the residence of the la mented Sheriff Owens. During the year Mr. Price moved the office to his new bonding on the courthouse squoare. where today Mr. Smoak la iaaulng the paper. Thf next year was eampalgft year and the whole state was throWn In to a political .war. B. R. Tillman, then plain Tillman, entered the race for governor, clalmlnn that he was the only friend of irj- poor man in the race'. J. C. Sheppard made the race against Tillman and after ^ a heated eampalg*. Tillman and those who ran on the Tillman ticket were elected. This same year Daniel Rehre an ] Charlie Rice began the publication of a newspaper knpwn as the Colle ton News. This psoer being grith the administration and the Press and Standard, an anti, did all of the printing fof the eoanty at a - very good price sad Tha Press- and Stan dard rah for over a year at a great loss. But this only Inspired Mr. Price to push hsrd«r and through energy and push alone. The Preaa and Standard outlived the Colleton News and was sgala recognised as the leading newspaper of the countv. The N<*ws suspended pub lication and The Preaa and Standard again had the whole field. _ Very few-men in the county could have won the fight under the circum stances, but those who know B. G. Price best, realise that he cannot he downed. He underwent' greater struggles and difficulties In the news paper‘business than anv of his suc cessors. . I am Tin a position to know wheroof I snenk.
