News reached Walterboro last Monday that a negro had been found dead in the upper part of this coun ty. The negro, whose name we could not l°arn, had gone from his home to a former home, and al though he had not returned, his wife expressed no uiieasiness at his absence, stating that she thought he was at the other place. Passers through a wood were attracted by the vultures and growlings of dogs and went tb the place only to mak. thin gruesome discovery. It is sup posed -t^at the negro was dead for quite a while. David Tolbert, a young boy. from lower part of the ^wunty, was brought here this week and lodged in the county Jail on a charge of murder. Tolbert lives in the Red Oak section of the county and last Monday morning while his vlcjlrn was sleeping In a shanty with two other negroes, David walked In and struck his victim in the head with an ax. The murdered negro was about 16 years of age. There were no eye witnesses to the affair, but it is understood that Tolbert b&s confessed to the murder. HMO.AKB.
