HONORS FOUNDERS X- V/V. , < * Institution One Hundred and Nine Years Old—Three Excellent Addresses Delivered. - Columbia.—One hundred and nine years ago the University of South Car olina was founded. Appropriate exer cises were held to hpnor the memory of those who caused this great Insti tution of learning to spring into ex istence. Beginning at noon with the annual meting of vhe General Alumni Association, the day was a fitting cele bration lx honpr of the university’s founders. The programme was nota ble. The University of South Carolina was founded in 1305. Gov. John Dray ton sent to the Iegisl%Mre the message which had as Its direct result the establishment of this seat of learning. t as South Carolina College, later as the University, again as South Carolina Collegd and now as the Uni versity of South Carolina, these many years have been filled with notewor thy ac.hievmeti;t, and the institution has sent Into ||he world many men ca pable of doing a man's work, V Charles A-.. Smith, Heytenant gov ernor of South Carolina, presided at the afternoon meeting-, which was‘held in the university chapel. In his intro ductory remarks he paid a high trib ute to S. C. Mitchell, former presi dent. Previous to this session,, the academic procession formed in front of the university library and wound in a stately munneg around the horse shoe driveway. First came the first year men, and in order came the sec ond year men, the third* year men, the junior law men, the fout^h year men, the senior lajsr men, the faculty, trus-’ tees, state officials and prominent vis itors. A« the procession reached the chapel the students formed a double line.' ond stood with heads uncovered, while the dignitaries marched between the ranks and led the way Into the auditorium.
