Thin committee on Federal action ' wan narAed at the recent conference • in Washington with President Wil- non. Secretaries Houston. Lane and Garrison,* A’ice President Marshall. Speaker Clark and other Denfocratic leader^. The idea was for the com mittee working with officials to be designated by. Secretaries Houston and Lane to prepare a proper bill for enactment by Congress meeting all the requirements and designe«^ to eliminate opposition as far as pos sible. ' Will Preiuire Hill. Considerable work has been done by the members of the coiami'tee since the recent gathering in Wash ington, and at the .meeting otr »he loth it in probabl? that a'satis;uc- tory composite measure can be made ready for Congress. ^ Secretary'Houston has designated as conferees on the part of his de partment Prof A. J. Henry, of the United States weather bureau; Raphael Zon. of the forest service, and S. H. McCrory. of the office of experiment stations. Secretary Lane has recently made a special recommendation to Con gress for the enactment of such a law authorizing the drainage and reclamation by the Cnip-d States of 0 K public swamp and overflowed lands in any State and Territory. * a ... ' 0 iMatnage Project- Itu lulled. While his recommendation relates «. « primarily to the reclamation of public lands, it authorizes inclusion in the drainage projects, under spe cified conditions, of State or privar. ly owned swamp land contiguous to the public land Yu to*.: in th * *. uk the reclamation of public lands and in th^establishment of homes and farms upon areas now uninhabitable, and Vorthless. Via- esnne, lad., and Reid, Whitford, en gineer of the Charleston unitary and drainage commission of South Carolina. Watson Is Optomlstk*. Commissioner Watson stated yes terday that for five years he has been working to get the^ Federal Govern ment to do something substantial toward the reclamation of the valu able l#w lands of the South. He uys he believes thst at last some- something really worth while is go ing to be accomplished; if notJiing more is done than the getting under way of actual work to reclaim the 70.- 000,000 acres of lowlands of the na tion, he,thinks thst the Administra tion will have accomplished -i from the' standpoint of public health and natural productivity the greatest piece of constructive legislation of the age. In Washington on the same day the board of governors of the National Drainage Congreu. consisting of President. Edmund T. Perkins, of ChicagoWlce President E. J. Wat son. of South' Wtarolina: John H. Nolen, of Missouri; Dr. Pratt, of North Carolina, and Mr Knight, of Chicago. Will meet at 10 A. Screwing the Lid Down. This action of the governor ex pands the lid now on in Charleston on Sundays pretty tight so as to.cov er thqJsle of Palms, not cnly on S in ' day,, however bit every day in the week as well. It also reduces the Sunday amusement feature at The resort, and. for that matter, in the county generally, to sacred concerts only, prohibiting, of course, fishing xcursions. baseball games, and so on. anywhere within the county limits. Some question is raised as to whether the Governor wfll allow surf bathing at the Isle of Palms and Sullivan’c Island on Sunday after this.' Xo Sunday S|*ort*. • The motorcycle racing held last Sunday at the Isle of Palms seems to have given the governor particular concern, and his communication ad dressed to Sheriff Martin deals large ly with this 0 element of Sunday amuse nients. After stating that he sees motorcycle races .vvis held, last Sun day. he writes: "I hope that you did not Jypow that these races \Vere going to be held, as I s*-e nothing In thenpid article which shows any effort on your part fo pre vent the aft me*' "I hope that you vv 11 i.r,n;v(li,i?< !v proceed to indict all who took pact i” said races, or attempt to d<» sor*;:jtv bring them before the prop# r tribunal for desecration of the Sabbath Dnv. and that you will keep a strict look-, out in cthe future amj have ndScted and locked up in county ja'l any and all perso:iVj>Jio shall AMeaipf to have any kigH^ofgraces or etthe- sports or amusements, save sacred concerts, on the Sabbath. There are some things which possibly we can be excused for not hearing,. If we did hear; and for not seejig, if we do see, but there can certainly be no ex- cuag in the eyes of God or man for allowing these things to go on lipon the Sabbath. „ “It in true that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath, but tye Sabbath was in- tendod as a d^y of rest and recrea tion. and for the worship and ser vice of God, And certainly not for the purpoee that these people put it to on yeeterday. I am mailing copy of this letter to Chief Constable Stothart, with in structions that he get busy also, and I hope that you will all see, in the future, that people obey the Sab bath. and the lawa of this Suite, in the official discharge of your duties.'* Xo Liquor MeMiig. In his. letter to . Chief Constable Stothart. the GoVernor says: “It fk thought aloud around here that John P. Grace’s idea in closin', up everything so tight in Charleston on Sunday is to drive everybody to the Isle of Palms, and that a bar room is to be run open and . above board over therf. It la also said that Mr. Grace is hoarding at the hotel in Charleston with the gentle man who owns the Isle of Palms Misiness. As to these rumors I do not know. However, notify the Isle of Palms people immediately upon receipt of this letter, that not a drop of wine, whiskey or beer can be sold or served tfafere, and if these orders are violated you are hereby directed to seize all the goods and to arrest the people violating the law, and if you cannot do this I will get a mar who can. Attend Btr th' to this, immediately, and fail not on penalty of th* loss of your job and th** jobs of your men just as quickly as th*> f-bgraph wires c»n transmit tlie message." * tf Sh‘-rifr Martin was seen'today and ked if he had any statement to make ^concerning the Governor’s ]et- *er. He'pad nothing to say. No statement was issued this morning by the Isle of Palms managemeii'.
