A: Robinson, of North Carolina, in Southern Farming.) J. P. Slawter. 'pf Forsyth County is a champion among (he tobacco growers of this state. For 36 years he has been growing tobacco, and the past year sold $5,438 worth of the weed. Mr Slawter’s strongest fort lies in his knowledge of the cultivation and preparation of the plant for the market. He sees to It that the tobacco is thoroughly culti vated three times, with cultivator and hoe. and that the land is left as nearly level as possible when the last plowing is finished. He never primes his tobacco until it is ready for topping, and at the same time he takes off from the top and bottom of the plant all the unnecessary leaves. The avearagp number of leaves left on the stalk to ripen and be prepar ed for the market is nine. Method of (Mring. Not until the tobacco is thorough ly ripe on the stalk does he cut it. and after it is cut and in the barn he takes three days in curing. On the first day he raises the temperature in the barn to 116 degrees and keeps it between that and 120 until the leaf is a bright yellow. Then he carries the temperature up gradually to ISO and leaves it there until the leaf is thoroughly dry, and finally, to kill the stalk, he lifts the temperature to 180, where it is left until the cur ing process is finished. He says that if this simple method of curing is fol lowed carefully by tobacco farmers, they will have no (rouble in getting a proper cure. He believes that the great trouble with many fanners is that they are too inffiatieal. both in ^cutting and caring the weed. H* also believey in thoroughly grading his tobacco, and to his judgment in this matter his remarkable ancceaa ■nay be attributed in n large measure. He makes aa many gradpd as there are classes of tdbacco. and says it pays to take a little time to do this. / Adult Bible rUftft Organized.
