Ar. aasasslu shot him in the face with a load of buck shot while Cooler was walking in the h.gh road. accompanied by a negro assistant. nam ed Deas. Warned by Deas. Edward Dale, who manages a store near by, found Cooler lying in the road, and thinking him dead, notified the sher iff and coroner by phone. They started at once to the scene by motor boat and automobile, accompanied oy two doctors, having meanwhile been notified that there were signs of life.'^'Wfter working over the wounded man for three hours they decided to send him to a Savannah lospital by boat. Cooler died while being carried to the boat early yes- ^rday morning. Saturday morning Cooler had raid ed several blind tigers kept by negro shop-keepers on the v island, and it is thought that he was tl\ife morning there was no r.-^ws an arrest.
