The following is the presentment of the Grand Jury: We, the Grand Jury, have pass ed on all Wlla handed out to us by the Solicitor and have found true bills on all such indictment*. The various committees appointed by the ‘foreman viz: Committee on chain gang, poor farm, roads, jail, public offices, schools. Highway committee submitted their report to the Grand Jury c-nd unanimous ac tion was taketi by said body. The reports of committees are in detail as follows: Committee on che-in gang reports; They visited chain gang which is now stationed in Broxrton Township. They find the condition of convicts as follows: Committee say they have a plenty t eat but r-re bare of clothes and if they’ get wet they have no change. The equipment is in fairly gocxl trim. We understand that proper clothing has now been supplied. Committee on Poor Farm find the living buildings in fairly good con dition. We find the stu-bies and shed Jn very bad condition, rotting down and fallluj in and we consid er them dangerous to house stock. We find cnly ore inmate la wo man) white. Piirknney vs. the A.C . L. and C. & W. C. R. C. R. R. Cos, for |40,- 000 which has taken up the first part of the week of Common Pleas court, there has been much interest, ni-d the court room has been filled with an interested throng of spectatcrs, in addition to the large number Of persons who were present because of their connection wiih the case. The legal battle has been one of the best seen if* thO Court House for a long time. Able counsel have been engaged in the case on both sides and every* Inch of the ground has been contested. The cx- aminaJlon of the witnesses was made by Mr. Grier This is the second trial of this case this year. It was tried here at the April term of tire court, re sulting in a non-suit by the presid ing judge. An appeal wr-v taken ai-J the Supreme Court decided to send the case back for a second trial. A strong effort was made yesterdr-y atteinccn by the attor neys for the lailror-d companies, to have Judge Sense direct a verdict. Alter hearing the arguments! Judge Ser*e decided to allow the case to go to the jury, and the arguments were then begun. Messrs. Holman, Padgett and Howell made speeches for the plaintiff: Messrs. Grier, Peurifoy, Willcox and Fitzsimmons spoke for the defendr-nts. These speeches were all very able presen tations of the different views of the counsel. Story of Um“ Accident to Mr. Pinck ney. It will be recalled that this suit Is to recover damages for J. fi. Pinckney who was run over, hurt at Yemassee, May 25, 1907, while engaged in repairing a C. & W. C. car oii the siding at this place. Ills injuries were very serious, c-nd he was in the hospital in Augusta for several weeks. He is now par tially paralyzed, rnd has no use of his right arm an*J hand. He walks with difficulty. At the time of the accident Mr Pinkney was nineteen years old. He is now t wenty-four. The main subject matter of this letter is one in which the people of Colleton county should be vitally lot crest* d there is a great possibil ity for this route to pass through the county, and the most logical point for It to pass is Walterboro. The letter states that Ciiarlestoo county will build "as good a blah- way as men aril mcney can con struct" between Charleston and Colleton counties. This will doubt- ls#s be to Jack son boro, and al ready there Is a splendid roadway from Jackson boro through Waltor- boro. Tills road has recently been completed and la a splendid piece of road all the way between these two points. In addition to- this the chain ga-ng is now at work on the road between Walterboro and Hendersonville which will also be in line. So there is a good hope that the proposed automobile route will pass through Walterboro. We would suggest that President Shaffer take the matter up and •-ithfr go himgelf or appoint a committee to go ami meet the spec ial scout of the American Automo bile Asttc ciatk n when he visits Charleston.
