May 17,—The work on the Bamberg, Ehrhardt and WalUr boro railway was commenced today at 3:15 p. m. This tells the tale of perseverance, determination and progressively on the part of Bamberg citixena; that the work will be completed will show the doubtful ones whatever is need ed to convince them that the rail way is to be a fact. There has been a great deal talked and written in the past five years about the rt ilwa, frou Bamberg to Ehrhardt: a number of towns have announced their intention to y buil > such a iine. realizing that Ehrhardt is situated in one of the best parts *of the county and that the oppo tu- nity for opening up a good territory ia great. Bamberg took the lead 1 about five years ago, when a number of its citizens, together with somie from Denmark and Walterboro and Ehrhardt, applied for a charter and received the fame. Senator J. B Black was instrurm ntal in getting the charter through the legislature. HAMBURG AT WORK. May 20- Dear Mr. Editor: It give* me a great deal of plt-a-urt to let you all money l e secured for the work?” The questio t was asked, and then the answer was wanting for a long time. Again and again schemes were devolved for working out the plan. Finally the citizens determin ed to build the road the naelvea. Under the leadership of such citizens as W. D. Rhoad, Thomas Black, J. A Wyman, J. F. Carter and others equally interested, the plans were perfected. They secured subsc. tp- tidtos from the citizens amountiiyz to about $30,000, and also way and terminal sites. When was in sight, two promi wealthy citizens of A. Williams and E. C. Hays, together with William C. Wolfe of Oran] burg, announced that they would from a construct! m company and take the contract to begin and fully complete the road. This contract has been worked upon for a perio 1 of several months, and today was Anally approved by all parties. The wont was begun as stated above this afternoon. It is the intention of the promoters to carry the work forward to the end. Work will be entered upon more fully on next Monday. A number of citizens were present with the official* of the railroad company and construcion company today to have a part in beginning the work, which is to mean a great deal to Bamberg and to all the neighboring country. It is the purpose of the company to extend the roa i to Denmark when the line has been completed from Bamberg to Ehrhardt. The ^oad will be. according t > the contn ct; about 14 miles in length; is to be of standard gauge; is to have rails not lighter than 56 pounds; is to om et ail requirements of the railroad com- mission; work is to commence in three months and the road sliall be completed in not more than three years. It is taken as an evidence of the earnestness of the construction company that work did not com mence in three months, but in three hours, it having been practically as sured that the greement would be completed today. Now boys, there are a good many of you who are want ing to quit farming and leave your pleasant^omes to go off and follow public work, but please take a fool’s advice and stay where you?are. Oh, yes. you will say “1 can make a $1.50 per day or perhaps $2.00. 1 know that 1 can save more at that than I can at farming.” But you are wr ng, because you cannot. For instance, take it this way. You can work two months al> ight; you save up a few dollars that was left over your board, then y m get sick and spt nd all that you have saved up and your board to still going on and it is not as high there as here. So you see that puts you behind again. You cannot bet on being well all the time, as 1 have been sick more since 1 have been in Florida than I was in 10 years in old South Caroli is.
