We do not mind, for in the part we played in the “campaign of 1908,'’ and in out criticism of a public act of our pub lic servants, we have po conscious- nesa of having done any man a wrong, and our discussion of the matter then and now has been based [upon issues and not persons. Usual ly our correspondent takes a high plane in his diecumions, and wears at a loss to account for his seeming “fall from grace" ia the matter of his communication in this issue. Lsst someone has forgotten the argument used in our editorial of last weak, we dedre to briefly recite wimft It ISontained. D.." but we see in this a precedent that is very dangerous to our freedom, and the rights of the “PEOPLE,” if you please. If the o delegation has the right to set aside the wishes of the people in this man ner, why would not succeeding delegations have the right to vacate any office held by a political op ponent and legislate into it their candidate? Let us suppose, for in stance, that "J. B. D." has been elected over “J. C. Y." to some office by a decided majority. The members of the delegation are his political opponents and voted for “J C. Y." When the legislature as sembles it ia found—by whom? The delegation, not the “PEOPLE"— "that the job is toa big fdr "J. B. D. ," and they "retire him on a good ■alary aa officer emiritus, and put the work in more capable hands," the hands of "J. C Y." Would “J. B. D." think the legislature right? Would "J. B. 0." think the editor of the newspaper ought to keep quiet? Ooee not "J. 8. 0." now think the matter is on a little higher plane than one of mere per- ieonalitks?
