We are more convinced every day that we need an organization of the biudnem and prdeuiona) men of the town into a commercial club or aome each organization.' There are vari ous matters which should come up before an association of the business, men. Suppose, for instance, some citizen has some proposition for the common good which he wishes to submit to the business men. The only way he has now is to go to each one separately, and he has no way to Reconcile the various opinions he is bound to encounter, and as a result the enterprise is almost sure to die. whereas, if an organization existed, the matter ctruld be threshed out i and would doubtless be adopted at once. What say you, gentlemen of the ^ i * town? Shall we organize? The editor of the Walterboro Press and Standard has put himself in a hole bv his answer to the tele gram sent him, for he says he is not willing for the people of Warren township to vote themselves into a better county even were the name of that county changed to Warren and Smoaka made the county seat. We would not misrepreseut him for anything, but this answer can only mean, it appears to us that the peo ple of Warren township must be kept as hostages for taxes in Colle ton. no matter how much they could better their condition by a change. This is hardly magnanimous. He should want* the very beat thing for hia people, and by voting themselves into a better county and having the county called Warren and Smoaks made the county seat, he ougtyt to be glad that the people among whom he wa^bprn and reared should thus have the opportunity to better them selves, and he should say: *‘Yes, while we hate to lose you, we realize it is for your beat interest to go elsewhere, and we are glad that you are to better your condition." But he is selfish enough to say no and thus commit himself to the proposi tion that he is willing to keep the people of Smoaks and Warren town ship down. 9 The above editorial appeared in * * the last issue of the Bamberg Herald. The Press and Standard does not .^irait that it is placed in a hole be cause of its answer to a silly tele- gram sent by some joker from \ Branchville. which, by . the way. is not in Bamberg county. The editor of The Press and Standard at first thought he would go into details in answering that telegram*, and show why it was not to the advantage of Warren township to annex itself to Bamberg county, but he remember- «] that Biblical injunction, which has reference to answering a fool ac- ‘ cording to his folly, and he decided that one word would answer the telegram. In the first place we do not con cede that if Warren township were 1j annex itself to Bamberg county it would better its condition; in fact we arc convinced it would not, and the following figures will prov« this to be,true: According to the Comp troller General’s report, real estate in Bamberg county is assessed at $4.18 per acre; in Colleton county, according to the same report, real estate is asseted $2.78 per u acre —a difference in the assessed valua tion of $1.40 per acre. " The editor of the Herald goea on it' ■ to say that we desire to koep the people of Warret for taxea in Colleton The above showing would to indicate that the people of Brnberg county, who desire to an nex Warren townahip, wish to do to merely as "hostages for taxes’^ in Bamberg county. The editor of The Prem and Stand ard does want the beet thing* for the people of his home township and his home county, and it is for this reason that he deplores this running after false gods on the part of his people, and he believes that should Warren township annex itself to Bamberg county that it would ,be making the greatest mistake possi ble. „ He does not see why the peo ple of Warren township appear to be desirous of going to Bamberg coun ty, and he does not believe U\»t many of these people are in earnest about this movement. For instance. Warren township has. for more than a half century, been favored beyond any other township in Colleton coun ty when it comes to public positions and offices of trust. These positions, of course, were merited, or Colleton county would never have recognized the superior claim* of Warren town ship.
