As I am in dan- ger ora tongue lashing will write • few items. In the beginning I must say that my silt nee has not bean due to negligence; but to the great amount of sickness here lately. I regret this, as it seems to be the only draw-back to) Ruffin, 'but even through this we still cling to our old feeling of independence which caused .us long ago lo be called “Don't worry kidi.” Although sickness has deprived us of the many pleasures, we do not grumble about our misfortunes and do as Martha did in the story; sr>end an infinity of trouble on the smallest things, or dream of calamaties if their child ren are an hour behind time, but we try to take things just as they come, and you will find us as usual ready to greet y "tu w ith a smile of welcome and give you the “glad hand." Just a word now in behalf of the good work that I see the young folks of Smoaks have begun, “Dis tance lends enchantment," so the old adage says; but that dosen't hold in this instance, as it is the on ly thing that keeps us from being present at your Society meetings, but as we can’t be there our thoughts and best wishes are for its success; for nothing tends to elevate and broaden the minds of girls and boys more than a 1 . literary - society. Rush the good work on. Mr Thomas Black’s winning smile has been sadly missed within our so ciety circle, for the past week. We were delighted to welcome him home Friday, having been attend ing the State Carrier’s Association at Newberry. He also visited friends at Columbia and Irmo and reported in general a very enjoyable trip. Messrs R D Carter, T M Williams and J W Miley paid Charleston a visit this week. We regret to hear of so many miz upderstandings about the picnic here, and hope still to have it later. Mr Robt Bla>*k and son, J I), of Florida, visited relatives here re- j cently. . a Our hearts go out in profound sympathy to Mr and Mrs J M Cros by, whose home was visited by the death ange} last week and w’afted to heaven the spirit of her infant son. T’is hard to give these little jewels up, but we should try try to think of God's way as being the best, and de vote our lives to him that we shall be in readiness for our summons. ' One less at home! The charmed circle broken! A dear face missed from its accus tomed place! But cleansed, saved and perfected by grace. One more in Heaven! One less at home! A sense of low that meets us at at the gate! Within a place unfilled and desolate; And far away, our coming to await. One more in Heaven! One less on earth!
