In his last communication this correspondent said that Smoaks was on a boom, but after reflecting a little the subsequent reverie is that there is one exception, namely: the Farmers Union local here. It is with sincerest regret that this cor respondent says that he believes tlifet Smoaks has the dullest local of any in the county. Berea and Buckhead have active locals, and both are doing well. Other places have good locals too. Then why is it that Sjnoaks cannot have one too? Every thing else thrives here, even the old bachelors. The forest fires have been raging around here recently and are doing a good deal of damage. Among the losers along this line may be men tioned J. J. L. Fender, who on Fri day afternoon lost 42 panels of fenc ing. Mrs Amanda Bryan lost about 100 panels of fencing and considera ble other damage to the timber woods w as done. We are sorry to report the illness of J. J. L. Fender, but hope for him a speedy recovery. Mr and Mrs G F Hiers and little daughter, Bessie Lee, spent Easter very pleasantly with Mr and Mrs W H Hiers. Henry McMillan, one of Varnville’s live agents, passed through our sec tion W’ednesday.
