James S. Farnum, who was under indictment for several offenses con nected with the late state dispensary, pleaded guilty last Wednesday morn ing to the charge of bribing Director Wylie by paying him over $1,600. for some business, and was sentenced by- Judge Prince to pay ?i fine of $5,000 which was paid at once. This was accepted by Attorney General Lyon, with the understanding that the other cases against him be not pressed. The jury who acquitted Farnum of a similar charge must feel pretty small about now. This confession which it seems to us, will strengthen toe case agumsi me principles- the officials charged w ith receiving bribes. of the County shall he (1) a Commu tation Road Tax of ($2) on all Males between the age.'of 21 and 60, unless excused legally and a 1 property tax of Two (2) Mills, said ; taxes to be assessed by the County i Auditor and Collected as are other taxes. Section 5. That the public roads of the County be made as straight and direct as possible, and the work done be of a permanent and scientific j nature, and that the first roads workeirshaii l*e from the County Seat to the boundary line of the County, and shall intersect as nearly as possible at right angles, the roads to be first worked being selected by the Supervisor and County Commis sioners. Section 6. That nothing in this Act shall be construed as prohibit ing the Supervisor and County Com missioners and County Road Engi neer from repairing any bridge or impassable road, either by use of por tion of Chain Gang or by contract Section 7. That this Act shall go into effect upon its approval by the ; Governor and that all Acts or parts of Acts not consistent herewith b? and the same are hereby repealed. A number of i>ersons have been .to kind enough to comment on the edito rial in last week’s is.-v.e aneqt some needed road legislation. It seems that the idea of the traction engine, the engineer and tin* permanent work is meeting w ith hearty favor, and we have as u ranees that the matter will receive th<* earnest con sideration of our law-makers. We have been ask cm} to out'ine a law em bodying the proposed legislation. Wo believe the following if enact ed would meet the requirements. — An Act to authorize the Board of County Commissioners for Colleton ^ * County to purchase Road Working Machinery and to employ Road Engi neer. Be it Enacted by the General As sembly. Section 1. That the Supervisor and County Commissioners of Col leton county are authorized and * t hereby directed to purchase at once a traction engine and other road working machinery for use on the public roads of said County at a coat not to exceed three thousand and five hundred ($35,(10.) dollars, to lx* paid for on such terms and with •uch conditions as seems best to them, from the rrad funds either now available or to be available. Section 2. That the said Super visor and County Commissioners of Colleton County.also employ a com petent Road Engineer at a salary not ^o excel d fifteen hundred ($1500) dollars per year to have charge of the lo«*d working forces of the County, and to lay off, grade, super- We bHieve the above will meet the requirements for some perma nent mad work in Colleton county. Of course there will possibly be considerable objection to this Act on the part of some of our people, prob- ist. It is the only Welded Fence, and. By the Electric Process the wire is made one 3rd. Wrapped wire wity hold moisture and Rust. 4th. Wrapped wire WILL SLIP. 5th. Fire will not harm or injure welded wire. 6th. Welded Fence contains All Large Wires. 7th. Welded Fence can be taken down and moved with least trouble. cSth. Terry & Shatter is the only Factory Agent for Welded Fence in Walterboro. s 9th. They .secured an extra low freight rate on wire to \Yalterboro. 10th. This reason: The last and best we will tell y • ’ you in private when you call. A. Wichman & Son. aUv thosa who are the Ifcaeficiaries under the present system. This is to be exacted, hut to offset this we^ will say that only by such legislation will the County make any, progress in building permanent roads. Under the pro < ut plan 2^10 w ill not find 10 miles of real first class road-bed in the County. HV 8 SUM. -V-- inte "J SOME DISTRESSING FACTS. > ■ ° ! South Carolina is one of our best agricultural Southern States, but there a few facts connected with her history that are very bad. and we are sure the conditions in South Carolina are no worse than in many of our Southern States. According to the tax books, the taxable value of dogs is a hundred thousand dollars more than the tax able value of all her sheep, hogs and goats combined. Clemaon College had one cow last year that fed herself and paid all expenses, giving a clear profit of $75.00, yet South Carolina sent away from her State ^ome nine millions dollars for dairy and poultry pro ducts. South Carolina spent eighty-two millions dollars for home supplies, including nine million dollars for fertilizer. Six millions went for com, and twelve millions for mules. Frdhi these facts it if evident that the farmers of South Carolina are not yet wide awake. It will be re membered that South ‘ Carolina raised more edrn per acre than any other Stale or section in the world. Then, to think that she would pay out *atx million** for corn. Certainly there is some agricultural education and the attendents were: Miss An nie Dopson with Mr. Hallie Mur- daugh. Miss Minnie Dopson with Mr. Mazon Polk. The bride was | beautifully gowned in white silk. After the ceremony the guests were invited in the dining room where cake was served. Mrs. Murdaugh is a very attrac tive and charming young lady of this neighborhood and has countless friends who wish her every poesible happines. —" Mr. Murdaugh is a prosperous young fanner. Mr. and Mrs. /Mur daugh received many valuable pres ents. Among the many relatives and friends that were present were: Mr. Eugene Hay and daughter. Miss Rosa, from John’s Island.
