A MERRY CHRISTMAS. We denire to extend to our reader* this week our very beet wishe* for a happy and enjoyable Christman anil a prosperous New Year. Never ha* Colleton county been in a better position to enjoy a Christmas. Fewer •f her people are in need and condi tions generally are better than in many years. This, too. will be a sober Qiristmas - prohibition is pro hibiting. Santa Claus will gladden more t heart» because- the selfish parent cannot squander his little for that which brutalizes. Many a little heart will be lighter, and. many 9 little boy’s and girl's Christmas will will be brighter because of prohibi tion, and could they but know, how thankful they would be) WHY NOT We hate seldom seen so great interest shown by our people as is now being manifested in the pro posed Cor federate Monument to he erected on the Court House Square: Perhaps those most interested in the monument are the few survivors of those who so nobly defended our Southland in the trying days of ,f»l to .(Vj. This remnant of Colleton’s Legion of Honor should be permitted to gaze upon this proof of our devo tion and reverence before they answer their last call. One of the most devoted of the survivors, in speaking of this proposed monument, said there were two things which he ° ’ cy wished to pee before he “crossed over”, and one of them is a monu ment on Court House Square to pre serve the memory of the Confederate soldier. This longing will find a responsive echo, in the breast of every-veteran of the Lost Cause, and it ia a wish so easy to be gratified, if everyone will unite in the effort being made just now. This brings us to consider the im portance of an organization in this county of Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy, There is no reason why we should not have a splendid organization among the descendants of our Confederate soldiers. Let us of the younger generations get to gether and endeavor to collect and preserve the history of this period, so that it may be transmitted to posterity. In almost every county in the State there are such organi zations and we of Colleton should not be behind. Mrs. Roger who lives next door was awakened about 5:30 o’clock by the roar of (lames, and on looking out saw that the Kitchen was about falling in. Noth ing could de done to save the build ings.
