The dance given last Thursday night at Hyme’s Hail by the young ipen of the town to the young ladies and their Fair visitors added much to the enjoyment of the Colleton County Fair. The hall was beautifully decorated with palms and ferns, the floor, as usual was very good, and the merry dancers enjoved themselves until a late hour before wending their way homew'ard. There have been several marriages recently and it Mother Rumor is quite ! true there wdll be several more in the near future. Some of our! young people seem to think like a certain Scotch girl I read abdut some time ago. She approached her father on the subject of her marri- age. He sard Janet, it is a solemn thing to U* married “Yes, father, she answered, but it is more solemn not to be.” Mr. Josh Catefton and Miss Mabel Padgett had a very pleasant trip to ! Hampton last week. Mrs. (\ W. Burgess and daughter miss Effie are visitiqg, relatives in Walterboro. A few young people, gatherer! at the home of "Uncle Doc" Breland last Thursday evening •^and had a very got#l social time. ^Xmong those present were Misses; Nelle Ulmer. Cora and Erfie Burgess, Carrie, Theresa and Rosa Breland, Messers. J. D. Caterton. John Padgett, Thomas Black, Kearse, Henry and Carson Breland. 1 can’t see why ! our young folks don’t get together more frequently. 1 am sure it would be quite a help to them. We are all getting too selfish. More of our time should be given to an inter course of friendship. Friendship is one of the greatest boons God can bestow on man. It improves happi ness and abates misery by the doubt ing of our boys and the dividing of our grief. What is the use to wear long faces and always stay at home by yourself in this world of sunlight. This saying “There is plenty of hap piness Hying around if we only make the effort to catch it,” is so true. There are some so-called Christians who make a little dark world of their own. They build the walls of their houses out of their troubles and sorrows. They put stained glass in the windows. They will have no pictures on the walls except thfe pic tures of their dead joys. There they live in gloom and sadness be cause they think it is a sin to enjoy life. 1 meet many persons who can talk for hours of their troubles, cares and sorrows, who seem to for get that God ever made a flower, or a star, or a sunbeam, or did a single kind, tender, thing for them. Miss Cora Burgess has returned home after a pl^sant stay with friends in Charleston, Summerville and Mt. Holly. Mr. Waiter Breland who has been in ill health for several months is now at Hot Springs, N. C. We sin cerely hope he will return much benefited by the trip. He is one of our most highly esteemed voumr men and is missed very much by all. Mr. Henry Bryan and Miss Irene Griffin were happily married Sunday evening by Rev. C. W. Burgess. (Juite a large number of friends wit nessed the ceremony. The bride was beautifully gowned in white China Silk. We wish the "young couple much success in theit voyage of life. CONSTABLE CORDRY HURT. Parker’s Ferry. Nov. 13.—Special: On the first day of November W. T. Cordry, .onstable for Magistrate Mellord, served a warrant on Flan- der Ford, a negro, charged with as sault and battery upon his wife. Ford hai submitted to the arrjst and was being taken to the.mads- trate’a office for trial. He had a gun and when the con stable attempted to take the gun the negro struck him on the back of the head three tinx a breaking the. gun and mflicting painful wounds, knock ing him down. He fell in a ditch and was left for dead by the negro, who has left for >arts unknown. He has not yet been apprehended. Magistrate Weeks issued a war rant for the negro, which is now in the hands of a special constable, but has not been served, as the negro cannot be found. An effort will be made to have the Governor offer a reward for his capture.
