It seems that most of the people here are either too busy «>r b'o negligent as to writing our county paper a few dots; so I will have to _come to the front again, and let the readers of this paper know that we are hustling people ready and able to cope with our sister towns. We are glad indeed to see so many people daily coming to our town on shopping tours, besiness, and socially. We. southerners, are a people much noted for hospitality and I’m sure Kutfin has its share. H W DuBois of Walterboro past through our midst last week. L M Herndon and son Frank were to Ruffin on business last Wednes day. Miss Y'iola Breland of Lodge paid Ruffin a short visit last Thursday. She was accompanied by her cousin, Mr Clarence Poston. It will indeed be a pleasure to have “Unity.” join us at our society next meeting, and if possible honor us with their help as well as please us with their presence. Our door is always open beckoning and pleading with all cur friends to come hither and join us in our noble work, and lets do all in our power to upbuild humanity. Miss Maude Padgett, one of our Ruffin belles is somewhat indisposed. She surely has our sympathy, and we trust she will soon be seen on the streets again. T M Williams visited his mother at Lodge a few days since. His recovery after an illness of several days seems to illuminate Ruffin with a ray of sunshine. We truly hope, he will continue to improve rapidly* Our Ruffin Literary Society meet ing was one of much note on Satur day night Sept. 25. We met at an early hour and carried out a very interesting program. Our query being. “Resolved that immigration is a help to America.” Sorry in deed were we that two of the de baters, on account of sickness, were absent, but in a few moments two of our earnest workers consented to fill their places and we had a real warm discussion. The judges final decision was in favor of the affirma tive. After the debate adjourned we were very much honored by an address given by Mr Perry Hudson,' of our able workers. He surely gave us some very beneficial advice., God grant that we may be able to pull many more boys out of the ruts of timidity, and place them on the : road for a high ideal. Before closing the meeting our Pres. T. A Black opened the doors of the Society, and in a few short remarks pictured very plainly to us the good derived from Literary work and we were the recipients of several members. God speed the time that j our old Anglo Saxon race will take a ' greater interest in education. • Our next meeting will convene on j Saturday ni^ht Oct. 9, at 8 o’clock,! our query is, "resolved that educa tion should be compulsory,” affirma tive Della Drawdy and Perry Hud son; Negative Beatrice Ulmer and Ben Crosby. Everybody is urged to join and help us. Dr Willis Hudson, of route No 2 visited the home of Mr Robt Black, Tuesday night last. Mrs Amanda Drawdy and children of Drawdys have returned home after a very pleasant visit to her sisters Mrs B B Crosby’s and Mrs H D Padgett. Dr C J Goodwin left us on last Tuesday for Charleston where he will attend the Medical College. We hate to give him up, even for assort time, one of our handsome boys; but glad indeed are we to see him aiming for a high ideal in life. We wish for him much success. “Nude” Henry Crosby one of our much beloved and aged gentlemen departed this life for his home on high Thursday Sept. 30. None can ever be competent to fill his place here. We greatly sympathize with the bereaved family. Willie Zeigier, of Bamberg, a traveling agent for Mr Thos. Black, passed through our town Thursday. Two manufacturers of road rolling, machines competed, the J J Case Threshing Machine Co and the Hu ber Manufacturing Co, each enter ing one of their latest model ten ton combined road rollers and traction engines. Two stretches of road equal in length and identical in conditions were laid off. and each roller went to work with one light 8-mule road scraper attached and at the end of 4 hours, each had dug, graded, shaped and rolled one thousand feet of splendid road, though it was evident that with the proper road scraper constructed for use with these powerful steam traction rollers, three times as much road could have been built in the same time and built better. The cost per mile is estimated between $8.00 and $10.00 per mile, not including interest on the investment, or wear or tear on the machinery. Satisfied with that test, the Super visor called for a hauling contest and suggested putting both the road scrapers behind one engine at a time and seeing if the engines could either of them pull this double weight with the scrapers set deep into the ground. The engines one after the other went along at their maximum speed without it becom ing necessary to open the throttle wide, apparently as unaffected by the load as an elej hant pulling a baby earriage. Opinion seems equally divided as to tne efficiency of the engines, but after so satisfactory a test, it is a foregone con du-sion that Beaufort county will employ modern power machinery in her future road build ing operations and use them for hauling material as well as the machines.-—Beaufort Gazett. ROAD MACHINE DEMONSTRA DON. Beaufort county has just conclud ed a weeks test of practial applica tion of steam road rollers to road building with a view to employing theae machines in improving her existing roads and building new ones. The primary purpose is to complete the eonatmetien of the old road frma flarieetoa el A DELIGHTFUL DANCE. On Tuesday evening at Hyrne’s Hall a most delightful informal dance was given by the young men of the town. Music was furnished by a local band and the merry dancers thoroughly enjoyed themselves for several hours. Those present were: Miss Lillian Farmer with Mr. Godfrey Hyme, Miss Eva Mace with C. H.
