S' BIRTHDAY DINNER. Ruffin. Sept. 15.—On Satur day. September t i th inst. the children and grtmd children of Magistrate L G Ulmer gather ed at his home for the purpose of celebrating his 06th birth day. the 12th. All the children w ere present with tl^ excep tion o< two. There were eleven children and eighteen grand children He has twenty-five grand children in all. At about 12 o’clock refresh ments were served in abund-' ance, which consisted of delici ous ice lemonade and ice cream, and at about 2 o'clock dinner was spread on the long tables in the shade of the beautiful trees which cover a reater portion of the yard, inner was plentiful a^ well as appetizing. , The afternoon was spent in enjoying music rendered by Mrs Stella Jones, Miss Beatrice Ulmer, Mrs Hudson aixj. others. Mrs Hudson presided at the organ. The crowd also enjoyed a 4 o’clock tea ^consisting of cakes ice cream and lemonade, after which they all went away; some to their homes and some to the Literary Society at Lit he Rock. The day way pleasantly spent by all who were present, and we shall all look forward to father's and grand lather's birthday from now on. May he enjoy many more just such days. There was but one thing to mar the happiness of the day, and that was the illness of the little baby of Mr and Mrs R W Ulmer, but we are glad to know that that he is recover in £-. One Present. There w^as a sociable given at the residence of Mr and Mrs P VV Risher last Saturday evening. All who attended enjoyed it very much. Mrs P J Liston and children visited relatives at St George and Grover last week. Messrs Washie Rischer and Spencer Connor returned to Clemson last Thursday. Miss May Hucks of this •lace, who has been visiting ier sister, Mrs J C Bowen of Savannah, returned home last week. J B Williams of this section was in St George last Thurs- day on business. Mi rs A B Barnes, who has been quite sick, is improving rapidly. P E Spell and Ben L Linder went to Branchville on busi ness last Saturday. Dr John H Hucks was on the sick list last week, but we are glad to see him out again. Rose. SMOAKS LOCALS. Smoaks, Sept. 14.—The patrons of the Smoaks school district No 5 voted on the three mill tax for the school purposes. The votes cast be ing 5 to 20 in favor of the three mill additional tax. Miss Nellie Barnes visited relatives and friends in Hamp ton recently. There will be an ice cream festival at Tabernacle church the fourth Saturday evening in September. The purpose of this festival is to aid the school at that place, Misses Mittie Matthew's and Bessie Bryan and others have been appoint ed as a committee to sell the ice cream. The public is cordially invited to attend and bring heavy pocket books so that they might spend lavishly. The Sunbeam Missionary Society of Smoaks Baptist church met last Sunday after noon. They had been practic ing their exercises for a good while and everyone took their ^Ifartwell. The cotton crop ^n this vicinity is very short, and it seems now that the entire crop will be harvested and sold dur ing this month, which will be very detrimental to the far mers. Don’t rust it on the market, but sell sparingly. Hon C W Garris of Den mark is visiting relatives at Smoaks. Mannie Browning of Sum ter is visiting Prof P C Garris. Miss Leah Campbell is visit ing the Misses Bolden near Orangeburg. Miss Fannie Campbell will go to Orangeburg in a few days- for the purpose of having her ear treated. A. P. S. There is a protracted meet ing at Rice Patch this week. We wish them much success. J B Godley and daughter, Miss Ruth, paid a flying visit to Cross Swamp last week, w’hich was enjoyed very much. Little Miss Marie Godley spent last Saturday night witn little Sue Godley. There was a very' pleasant pinder boiling given at the residence of Mr Alvin Harvey last Saturday night. Misses Julia, Minnie and Annie Dopson spent last Sun day with their aunt, Mrs Helen Crosby. Little Miss Susie Godley was badly frightened by hav ing a snake crawl in her lap while silting in the shade of a tree one day last week. A. G.
