Any person or poraona who ahall cat down, burn or deface any mile poet or atone, erected by the county commissioners or county super* visor of any county, he, she or they, upon conviction thereof shall forfeit and pay the sum of ten dollars, to be recovered by indictment or information be fore any court of competent ju risdiction* 4, 8ec. 447. If any person shall wilfully demolish, tnrow down, alter, or deface any gnide post, every person so offending shall, upon conviction thereof betore any magistrate of the proper county be lined in a sum of not exceeding ten dollars and the cost of suit, or be sentenced to labor on the public works of the county for a term of oot more than thirty days, and the money when collected, shall be by the magistrate collecting the same, paid over to the county treasurer. “S*e. 418. The county board k» of commissioners of an) county neglecting to cause the public highways in their county to be posted and numbered and to! have pointers erected at each fork of said highways declaring the direction of such highways shall be liable to pay the sum of leu dollars for each and every said neglect, to be recovered by indictment in the court of gen eral sessions of the county with in which the same occurs, to be collected and paid to the treas urer of such couuty for the use of the county. Provided, That no county commissioner shall be liable to said penalty who shall put said pointer at such times as he shall have his division of roads worked.” The civil code of South Caro lina lias also a section bearing upon this which gives the county commissioner authority to erect such sign boards and charge the cost to the county; and the ne glect of this can be construed by ihe public to mean that they are indilferent to the convenience of the public. The section is as follows: “Sec. 1.837. Each road overseer within his district may erect and keep up, at the ex pense of the county, at the forks and cross roads a post and guide* board, or finger board, contain ing an inscription in legible let ters, directing the way and dis tance to the town or towns, or public pfaces. situated on each road respectively.”—Spartan burg Journal.—York ville En quirer.
