The election for a bond issue for a new school building has been ordered P to be held July 23, and Walterboro is to be congratulated on this for ward step. We trust that there will not be a vote against it, but that this town w ill do as other towns in the State do, give a unanimous vote in favor of the issue, alt would be a short-sighted policy for the town to vote down this proposition. Jt would mean that educational in- tersts would be set back a genera tion. and that Walterboro would possibly never have a new school buildingj k That one is sadly and badly needed is patent to any observer, and there is absolutely no other way bv which one can be got ten but b> a bond issue. Please remember this, you w*ho are think ing of voting against this proposi tion. What can one offer better than this plan? We must have a new school and this is the way to get it. But we are arguing as if there were some persons going to vote against the bond issue. We do not o' reallly believe there is any opposi tion to it. A few persons were not willing to sign the petition, but we believejthey have the best interests of the town too much at heart to longer adhere *to their opposition. A majority of'the freeholders have •poken representing a vast majority of the property of the town, and we are all good democrats when it comes to majority rule. Let us think of the Itenefits to ac crue. Already a more lively interest is being taken in the schools. An j election has been ordered to vote on the establishment of a high school, j and to elect trustees. These are 1 important matters. To have a good 1 achool it must be wisely governed, and the government is vested in the | trustees. Therefore, it behooves i the voters to select men qualified to hold these important positions; men who are known to have an interest in educational matters and men who know how to conduct a good school. The high school is a feature capa- Jbk of being made a great succeas hare. Every year at least 100 boy wnd jbrk go to other counties to attend of Walterboro, a* «hown by the tax hooks of the Mill Town, has been flieti j with tbe Town Council oi the Mid town askinc' that a special eiecti >n be held in tbe said town for the purpo** of inauitn; * bonds for the erection of a school hnlld- : wg in the aaid town, such )>ond issue to amount to iwputy thousiud dollars in tbe aggregate, to mature in ten years from ihe date of iasuc. aud to bear in- i terest at the rate ol five p i cent, per | annum, payable aemi-aDnuaMy, and to j contain such other provisions, stipula- ! tions and conditions aa in tbe j jd^meut of tbe said Town Council mty be neces sary and proper, now, therefore, it ia Ordained.
