Unawed by influence and unbrtbed by gain. THE NEED OF BLOOD HOUNDS. Emphasized by the unfortunate tragedy at Smoaks Saturday night is the need of blood hounds. Had Colleton county owned a pair of blood 1 round* as has been provided for overjtwo years by legislative enactment, there b every probability that the red-handed murdem- of J. Benjamin Smoak would now be be hind the ban. In truth there is a strong possi bility that had the murderer known that a pair of blood hounds would, in a few hours, be on his trail he would never have committed this crime, and young Smoak would now be living. It is a short sighted policy to longer refuse to obey the man dates of the legislative enactments providing for this necessary precau tion, and we believe that Supervisor Griffin will not longer delay purchas ing for Colleton county a pair of blood bounds. IS HUMAN LIFE SO CHEAP? A most horrible tragedy has been committed in our county; the motive being the poeession of a few paltry dollars. For ninety-five dollars a •* 0 # • human life, bidding fair to be one of great usefulness to hb community and county, has been taken. Such a crime to have been com mitted in certain sections of thb county where the negro race is very ignorant and criminal would not have excited so much comment and created such a sensation, but in section of the county noted for the education and progress! veness of its Jttjtyje. accentuates all the more this terrible greed for money. To what are we codling as a people? Is human life worth so little in Colle ton county? Where can the blame be placed for these horrible crimes? Is our civilization at fault? Is it the result of non-enforcement of law? What can be done to cheek the r spirit of lawlessness? What must we do that our lives and property may be safe from the hands of the night prowler and assassin? These are questions of vital concern to our people, they must be answered if we are to maintain our standard of civilization, our degree of enlighten ment and our progressiveness. Sel dom is such a criminal bom, he must be the result of conditions. Like a fungus growth created by condi tions entirely outside of its control, which grows because it cannot help growing, because of these conditions are such criminals in our county. They are so made and to remove the criminal we must better these con ditions. lien most be made to know that when a crime like thb b com mitted they will suffer the punish ment therefor. Men must be made to reaped law and order, and to feel that any infringement of the law whatever, large or small,* must receive its punishment. Special;--We had a very interesting meeting of the {•Irons of the Bethel School District st the school bouse on the evening of May 22nd, an account of which will probably be of some interest and we trust, inspiration to some others. There had been considerable talk Ol voting off the three mill tax levy for school purposes, so we, who real ly love our country and are interest ed in ita future development, loaded op our old guns with the very best amunition obtainable, and went out to meet, as we thought our oouatry’s foe, but Lo! he waa not on the ground. The meeting was called to order by (Juillb Breland, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, promptly at 8 o’clock. After a friendly diacuarion of those questions pertaining to the heal interest of the school iu the oommanity, short pointed talks on the importanoe of better training of the sunds of the children were made by Dr J P Herndon, E H Ulmer, and Rev C W Bargees. The result of the meeting is that we are to have an additional room to the school house ready for the open ing in Angust, and a considerable amount of money necessary to bmld thb addition was «u been bed by the patrons on the spot We will employ two teachers in stead of one for the future work in our school an^ the tax levy will re main. The article from The Yorkville Enquirer has aet us thinking. We are desirous of doing all within our power for our town and county’s material development, and we be lieve nothing will go further in this direction than a campaign of pub-' icity—of advertising, if you will. We realize that this paper has one of the requisites necessary to make advertising pay and that is circula tion. If it does any good to let peo ple know what one has to sell, or wsnts in a business or professional way then we are in a position to do that—our paper goes into more homes in Colleton county than it or any other paper has ever done be fore.
