[ One of our reader* asked us for ! an explanation of the rabbits one j sees on post cards and everything else jiertaining to Easter. ^ Perhaps i then* aPe others Who would be inter ested in knowing, so we reprint the i following clipping which explains it. The Church council in olden times deckled that Easter Day should Ik* the first Sunday after the full moon • town ' which bapptns upon or next after March 21; and if the full moon, hap- ,~„l Friday (>ena ujjon a Sunday, Easter is me * Sunday after. The only reason for mentioning in t<>wn this bewildering decision, of the j Church is that it gives a hint of the I cfmYieetion between Easter and rab bits. It must first lie explained that j the rabbit is all a mistake* and the animal in question should really lie* a hare instead of a rabbit. The hare! has always been the symbol ot the | ^moon, and as the moon decides the timeof Easter, it is quite proper and natural that the hare sould he asso ciated with this season. In Germany the Easter hare is almost as impor tant a personage as St. Nicholas. There is a marked difference be tween the rabbit and the hare. The baby rabbit comes into the world blind and helpless, while the baby hare has its eyes open from the be ginning. It has been believed that the hare never close* its eyes, and that is one reason why it is chosen as the symbol of the moon which sees everything.—Branchville Jour nal. MANY HATS SOLD. >r '5!
