ASHTON ITEMS. [Written for last week] Ashton, Mar. 12. Editor Press and Standard:— v our scribe has been enjoying the genial spring weather too much to drop a line about our live little town. Two social features have taken place here recently that did credit tocfur town. Both were enjoyed by all. The church entertainment on Mar. 6th surpassed our ex pectations thrice financially. The crowd could not be accc- modatedand the exercises were given close attention with frequent approvals. Tlianks to the patronage. The Knights invited friends, relatives and brother Knights to a banquet at their hall on March 9th. At the appoint ed hour the hall was filled with a bevy of pretty girls with their fathers, mothers and sweethearts. He who fails to enjoy such a feast; pretty girls and every eatable that could be thought of at hand; is poor in deed. The oyster and fish surpassed the fowls, hams etc, in appreciation. We want another banquet soon, Mr. Knights. No hard times is thought of when such a table as you set is placed before us. The children, grandchildren and some friends of Mr. Luke Stanley spent his birthday, March, 10th, with him. Mr. Stanley is one of our oldest citizens. We hope he will spend many more birthdrys as he did Wednesday with his loved ones around and a sump tuous dinner to bring smiles to his genial face and to do honor .to his hoary head. W. S. Black of Allendale spent a few days of last week here with his daughter, Mrs. J. M. Jones. Mrs. W. D. Berry visited Smoaks last Thursday. H. N. Wood of Moselle is here buying hickory logs. A little girl has come into the home of W. O. Jones to begin its earthly pilgrimage and to bring more happiness into the world. The millinery store of Miss Effie Jones seems to be one of the most popular stores in town at present. The girls love to be looking at the pret ty spring hats and well they may for this season the hats will surpass themselves in beauty. Our ears are screwed to their highest pitch waiting to hear two w dding bells at Ashton. Which will ring first? An entertainment is in view for the closing exercises of our school. We know Miss Daly will do credit to herself and school. 1 he farmers are in a rush at work; hauling fertilizers, some planting and some trying to keep “Mr. Lark" from eating what corn is up. The contest is interesting. The hustler will win. Who is it? Ashtonian.
