The prohibition question has not yet come up for debate though th**j bills providing for State wtde prohi- 1 -bkior. have been introduced and arH on the calendars. ■* Senator Lide. of Orangeburg, has introduced a bill providing ior a general election throughout the State to be taken on the question as to whether the *tate shall go prohi bition or not. It provides that the election shall be held to determine the State's policy regarding the sale of alcoholic liquors and the election is ordered for August 24tn. The question to be answered in this election are: r 1. Are you in favor of State pro hibition? 2. Are you in favor of local op tion between county prohibiton and the county dispensary system? 3. Are you in favor of extending local of lion between a system of prohibition or license or the county dispensary system? 2 Charleston through Senator Sink- 1 H ler has proposed a bill along the {Jj same line. ‘ y Senotor Appelt has a bill to im* pose a heavy license tax upon whis- Q key drummers soliciting orders for , ^ whiskey in this State. The purport 1 £ of the bill is to make it prohibitive. [ ^ Just what wi’l be the result of all m these proposed measures on the £ whiskey question ' seems to be in i very great doubt- It will l»e recalled that the house at the last session passed a State wide prohibition bill which was killed in the ‘ehate. It is not at all certain that this legislature will pass State wide prohibition. The senti ment seJms to be growing amongst the members that the cause of tem perance will be best promoted by allowing each county to vote on this question as under the present law. It may be, however, that the refer endum proposed by Senator Lide will be adopted so that the matter may be passed upon by the people themselves. The dispensary committee of the house to whom was referred the prohibition bill introduced in that body submitted a majority favora ble report and a minoritj unfavora ble report. Mr. Kibler, who is on this committee, signed the majority report.
