MURDER AS AN ECONOMIC DRAWBACK The English Home Secre tary recently ’ announced in Parliament that since January i, 1904, but 88 murders had been committed in London, with a population of 4,536.541, and but six of the murderers had escaped conviction. Ini saying this, he of course said that the reason there were but 22 murders a yehr in that ini mense ]>opulation, was because so few, so very bw, murderers escaped the gallows. In the United States the average number of murders annually from 18^5 to 1904 is stated in a recent publication to be 6,597.
