GATED. Hampton, 6. 0., January 7: —Mr iStualla, of New York re- presenting the security company in which former County Trea surer Langford was bonde,d is in Hampton investigating the treasurer's books. It will be remembered that Mr Langford was recently suspended by Got- ernor Ansel on a report from the Comptroller General, which alleged a shortage amounting to nearly $18.00. Mr Smalls could obtain very little informa tion, as the treasurer’s office is closed until the further order of the Governor. It is reported te The News and Courier corre spondent that the Comptroller will come to {lampion'or will s“iid sumo one to Hampton to day or to-morrow for the purpose of going over the books with the security company man. Mr Henry 8tokes, who was recently appointed county trea surer by the Governor, on the recommendation of the Hampton County delegation, has not as yet assumed the duties of that office. He will probably com mence work in the otlice in about a week. Those taxpayers who have not as yet paid their taxes are great ly worried about the penalty attached to all taxes paid after January 1, for many could have paid before the limit had expired had not treasurer's otlice been closed.
