Kditor Press and Standard: On last Saturday afternoon Mrs J J Hiers had the pleas ure of entertaining the Chris tian Woman’s Board of Mis sions The meeting was well attended and a very interest ing program was carried out. Among tnose who took part in the exercises were. Miss Blanche Hiers, who read a paper entitled“The Tragedy of a Soul." Miss Claudia Hiers then read a paper on "Wo man's Work,” which was com posed by Miss Martha Hern don. Miss Laura Hiers re^d quite a lengthy story about “The Rich Ruler’s Daughter.” I^st but not least, Mrs M U Bowers gave us a real sermon on Peter’s Commands to Cor nelius. » We then sang a hymn and had prayer, after which we aujourned. The next meeting will be December 8 at the home of Mrs Clarence Hiers. After the business session we repaired to the dining room to partake oi refresh ments. Miss Mattie Herndon. Holi day rates will be in force, and it is expected that every live teacher, principal and super intendent in the State will be present. The program of the general sessions and the general de partments have been practically completed and will be publish ed in about ten days. Some ol the best speakers in South Carolina have consented to make addresses, among whom are Sen B K Tillman, Dr S C Mitchell, President of the University of S C., Col O J Bond, Supt of the South Caro lina Military Academy, Rev J Henry Harms, President of Newberry College, Supt-Elect John E Swearingen. Hon Jno G Richards of Kershaw, Judge George W Gage of Chester, Dr Wm Burdell and other well known public men and educators. Miss Nance of the School Improvement Associa tion has just secured the con sent of Prof P P Claxton of the University of Tenn, to make the leading address be fore that organization. Besides the general pro gram of the Association, of which L T Baker is president, each of the affiliated organiza tions and departments have arranged attractive programs. Supt. O B Martin of the As sociation of County Superin tendent Miss Mary Nance, President of the School Im provement Association, Prof W K Tate, head of the As sociation of Town and City Superintendents, Dr P H Melf, President of the Association of Colleges, Miss Minnie Mac Feat, President of the Kinder garten Association, and Miss rope, President of the Primary Department have all secured the best available material for their respective program. The halls and lobbies of the State House will be used -for the occasion. The senool ex hibit will be displayed in the lobby on the second floor and here also will be located the headquarters of the Associa tion, where each teacher is re quested to report upon arrival and secure a membership card and badge. A reception will be tender ed the visiting teachers by the teachers of the schools and colleges of Columbia, Thurs day afternoon, December 30, in the lobby and library. Music will form an interesting part of each evening urogram. Misses Nance and Selby have been appointed at the head of the committee of the afternoon reception and music, while Col A R Banks, heads the general reception committee. Al though the crowd will be large ample hotel accomodation at reasonable rates has been pro vided. Smoaks, Nov 23—Special: The residence of Frank Hern don was totally destroyed by fire Sunday night between 12 and 2 o’clock.
