AND $1.00 HOME LIFE ON THE FARM Synoptu of What Dr J L Mann Said Recently J L Mann, in a discussion of “Home Life on the Farm,” in his excellent address at the Farmers, Institute Monday said in part: We hear great complaint, on all sides, that boys are leaving the farms and that higher education is the cause of this. Who is responsible for this desertion? Not the colleges to be sure. If they <Jo not give the pupils high ideals and wider horizons, they fail far shore of their mission. ’Twas for this purpose that they were founded. Let us ask freely what effort go farmers make to keep them there? What is needed is to foster intellectual life and encourage social life. . ^ farmeis believed in train- sunk by the town—the supervisor ing in agricultural colleges. • raised a nickie. something would be found tor the boys to do when they re turn home. 1 knew a boy. who returned home with his with your children and say to them, “You are needed here at home, and by God's help, you shall -become what you were intended to be.” Prof. Mann advocated the teaching of elementary agricul ture in the common school, a school in each county to teach boys to grow cotton, an experi mental station in each county or agricultural district to be under the direction and con trol of the State Agricultural College. Also a farmers’ in stitute in each county of a week or ten days duration, at! which experts would speak and farmers exchange exper iences. He plead for improve-! ment in nual v schools and for larger salaries aed more favor able terms, that the children in the country be not deprived of that which is theirs by right. 1 LOUIS COHEN AND COMPANY 232 & 234 Kinar Street, Charleston., S.
