In a short while. Wwever, a rain came up and the crowd had to seek shelter. About an hour was thus lost, and when speaking was resumed it was to a smaller audience. The weather was very threatening and about five •’slock another heavy rain was com ing up. All candidates had been heard but those for the Sup rvisor’s office, and after due consideration the chairman decided to adjourn the ■Meting without hearing them. Al most the first applause of the cam paign was given here, which kind of .frightened some of the “animals,’’ but it was soon found to be the re sult of friendly feeling, and the speakers responded in the best speeches delivered so far. There was a little spat between Messrs. ' HID and Smith again over the same matter of salary as was discussed at Riet Patch. Mr. Smith was interrup ts! abo by several other persons in tha audience and after fis speech there was some discussion between Urn and some of his questioners. Mothing followed, however, Mr Dodd, was the only absent candidate. no matter for whom the audience hollered. The matter then rested here, but many expressions were heard in the crowd that the speaker had acted unfairly in bringing up these matters when Mr. Smoak had no chance for reply, and when by a tacit agreement they were not to be brought up again. At the conclusion of tha speaking. Mr. S. B. Saunders, arose and in a few well chosen remarks thanked Chaifman Howell, for his fairfcsas in presiding and his fahhfulnam in attending all the meetings, proposing three cheers for him, which were given with a will. Thus closed a memorable cam paign, and the “animals’’ went to their homes. RESULTS OF FIRST PRMARY. The Election Contained Many Surprises. Those Running in The Second Race. The voice of the people, as ex pressed at the ballot box on Tuesday, contained many surprises. The results, as shown by the tabulated report in this issue, indicate what the voters did. The Press and Standard delayed its issue in order to get the official results to prevent any misunder stand as to the result of the election. Messrs Sanders and Robertson re ceived a very flattering vote for the house of representatives* as did Mr Platt for county commissioner. G W Way and W W Smoak Jr. will make second race for the house of representatives. L G Ownes will be opposed by W R Fox for sheriff, while H D Padgett and E R McTeer will run the second race for clerk of court. Dr H W Black and H S Strickland are to be candidates for county superintendent of education. The race for supervisor will be be tween J E Moore and J 0 Griffin. R E Jones was re-elected treasurer over his two opponnets. A A Pat terson and P. M. Buckner will run again for auditor. C G Henberaon was re-elcted master. D D Rhode and J M> Benton will run for coroner. Jasper Robinson and D E Smoak ill run for county commissioner. A Card to tha Public. The private school of Miss Helen E. Malone will open for the new session on Monday, September 21st. Patronage is asked because it is be lieved that a good senool of this kind is a real necessity in every ferm. Many desire that their children should be more carefully watched over, surrounded with choices, asso ciations, and instructed more in reference to individual needs and •pecial requirements than can be looked for in the generality of schools. It is the particular en deavor of Miss Malone’s school to supply these advantages in giving the best moral and intellectual train ing possible. Succes has crowned its efforts heretofore, but it ever strives to improve on itself, and to do still better by every pupil intrusted to its care. Hence it is cnofidently hoped that the e:isuing year’s work will be a great advance on the past; and that personal attention will be, more than ever, given to every child. All grades are | received. The preparation of boys and girls for college is a specialty. Those who think of patronizing this school are asked to apply as soon as pos sible. * SMITH LEADS IN COLLETON.
